A new member joined our group this week after forty years in federal government work and government construction contracting. Before he had even signed his agreement, I gave him the most important piece of advice he’ll get from us: forget almost everything that career taught you about making decisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That sounds harsh. It isn’t meant to be. His experience made him careful, thorough and wary of any financial commitment. Those are fine qualities in a large organization. In a martial arts school, they’ll push you into bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

Here’s why, and what to do instead.<\/p>\n

Two mindsets that don’t mix<\/h2>\n

Big government and big business train people to operate where there is, effectively, an unlimited amount of money to draw on. Decisions go through review. Risk is avoided. Nothing moves until every clause is checked. That produces what I call analysis paralysis, and inside a huge institution it mostly works, because the institution can afford to be slow.<\/p>\n

A small business can’t. There is no reserve to fall back on while you study the problem. The only mode that works is:<\/p>\n

Do it now. Think about it later. Make things happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bureaucrats and entrepreneurs are oil and water. It isn’t a matter of intelligence. It’s a completely different way of thinking. The most visible example today is Elon Musk, but Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Henry Ford all worked the same way, and so did Benjamin Franklin, however far back you want to go. Make it happen, and worry about everything else afterward.<\/p>\n

To his credit, our new member got it immediately: “Gotta get things done.”<\/p>\n

What the fastest growers say<\/h2>\n

When he asked the group where they had started and how they overcame the fear, Sensei Riley Fyfe answered first. He started with a small recreational program in a rec center doing $7,000 to $8,000 a month. He’s now at $60,000 a month. His advice:<\/p>\n

“Anything you learn here, implement it right away and don’t hesitate. Get it done.”<\/p>\n

I’d only add: don’t overanalyze. The owners who grow fastest are rarely the ones who understand a system best on day one. They’re the ones who put it in place the week they hear it and then learn from what happens.<\/p>\n

Jason Purcell said the same thing in martial arts terms. If a technique doesn’t work, it’s not that the punch doesn’t work; you didn’t rotate your hand enough. You show up, you ask questions, you stay humble and you fix what you’re doing. Treat the business the way you treat your training.<\/p>\n

The same mindset kills enrollments<\/h2>\n

This isn’t only about the owner. You’ll meet the same mindset across your enrollment desk.<\/p>\n

When I teach enrollment sales, there’s always a parent, usually an attorney or a CPA, who wants to pick apart every line of the agreement. The general rule is that there are some people you don’t want, and you can’t let one of them derail your process. You present the program. You don’t negotiate the paperwork clause by clause with someone who’s looking for reasons to delay.<\/p>\n

It works the other way too. When the owner is the one hunting for reasons to delay, nothing gets implemented.<\/p>\n

The mid-$50,000 plateau<\/h2>\n

Here’s something I told the group that surprises people.<\/p>\n

I can think of five school owners right now who started somewhere between $7,000 and $14,000 a month, are now consistently between $52,000 and $57,000 a month, and are angry about it. One of them started at $12,000 and now runs about $55,000. Riley and I had a conversation about him being annoyed that he’s “only” at five to eight times where he started.<\/p>\n

That anger is not a problem. It’s the fuel.<\/p>\n

Growth is never a straight line. You peak, you dip a little, you peak again. And I think a lot of that has to do with the psychology of running a small business.<\/p>\n

Pissed off or ecstatic<\/h2>\n

I’ve always described running a small business as a little bipolar. You need to be either pissed off<\/strong> or ecstatic<\/strong>. Anything in between leads to stagnation.<\/p>\n
