A martial arts franchise gives you a proven brand, curriculum and systems in exchange for an upfront fee, ongoing royalties and less control. An independent school keeps all of the profit and all of the decisions, but you have to build or buy the systems yourself.<\/strong> Which is better depends on how much of a business system you already have, and what you’re willing to pay for one. I’ve been on both sides: I built Mile High Karate as an independent school and began franchising it internationally in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you’re really buying with a franchise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A good franchise sells you three things: a system that already works, a brand people recognize, and support while you learn. Those are real advantages, especially for a first-time owner who has taught classes but never run a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is whether the system is actually good at the things that decide whether a school makes money: marketing, enrollment, pricing, retention and staff development. A famous name doesn’t fill a school by itself. In my experience, the schools that thrive, franchised or not, are the ones that run a real enrollment engine and price at the top of their market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What independence costs, and what it pays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An independent owner keeps every dollar that a franchisee would send out as royalties. On a school doing $50,000 a month, even a mid-single-digit royalty adds up to tens of thousands of dollars a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost is that you have to get the systems from somewhere. Most independent owners who stall don’t lack talent. They lack a tested process for generating 100 leads a month, converting at least 20 of them, and keeping monthly dropout under 2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to evaluate a martial arts franchise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s Franchise Rule requires franchisors to give you a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) at least 14 calendar days before you sign or pay. Read all of it, and have a franchise attorney read it too. Pay particular attention to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. All fees:<\/strong> the initial fee, royalties, marketing fund, technology and training fees.<\/li>\n
  2. Estimated initial investment:<\/strong> the full range, including working capital.<\/li>\n
  3. Financial performance representations:<\/strong> what existing franchisees actually earn, if the franchisor discloses it.<\/li>\n
  4. Outlets opened and closed:<\/strong> how many franchisees have left, and why.<\/li>\n
  5. Territory:<\/strong> what’s protected and what isn’t.<\/li>\n
  6. Restrictions:<\/strong> required suppliers, pricing rules and what you may teach.<\/li>\n
  7. Renewal, transfer and termination:<\/strong> what happens when you want out.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Then call current and former franchisees listed in the FDD. Ask what they earn, what they pay, and whether they would buy the franchise again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
