Have someone inside walk you to the decision-maker, offer something useful, and bring staff into your regular classes. And because employers sort people by income, the employers you pick also shape the kind of leads you get.

I call this The Walk-In Method. Here’s how it came up and how to run it.

How do you turn a member’s employer into a lead source?

Ask your member to walk you in to the person who runs the place. Don’t go the roundabout way. On one of my recent coaching calls, a school owner told us a current member works at a behavioral-health agency for troubled youth. The agency has a lot of counselors. The member wanted a class for the kids. The school owner wanted the counselors, the staff, as the market, and asked how to use the kids’ class to get in front of HR and administration.

My answer: skip the strategy and ask. How many counselors are there? Who runs it? Would you walk me in and introduce me to the administrator? A warm introduction from a trusted employee beats any cold letter to HR you’ll ever write.

What do you offer a care agency?

Offer two things: the kids’ class as a community contribution, and a program for the staff. The kids’ class is goodwill. It’s the right thing to do, and it shows you’re there to help, not just to sell.

The staff program is where the business is. Counselors in these settings deal with irrational behavior and physical outbursts, and they need to stay safe. When someone is untrained, that’s when the kid is most likely to get hurt and the counselor is most likely to get hurt. That’s a real problem you can help with.

Then make it easy to say yes. Offer counselors a trial, or even a free month. Put them in your regular adult classes rather than building a separate program. They get consistent training and a community, and you get members who stay. Add periodic sessions on site at the agency to keep it connected to their job.

What should you teach care staff, and what should you stay away from?

Teach personal safety: escapes, balance and confidence. Stay away from teaching restraint techniques for use on clients. This is the most important section of this article, so read it twice.

Many care agencies are required to use a state-approved or accredited crisis-intervention and restraint curriculum, such as CPI, Mandt, Safety-Care or Handle With Care. Unless you’re certified in the agency’s specific curriculum, you do not teach holds or restraints for staff to use on the people in their care. Prone restraint, meaning holding someone face down, is dangerous, and it’s not something a martial arts school should be anywhere near. Many agencies also have hands-off policies. Ask about that before you design anything.

What you can offer is complementary training for staff:

Escapes from grabs of the wrist, neck and clothing.

Balance, positioning and awareness so staff don’t get knocked down or cornered.

Fitness and confidence through regular classes, which makes staff calmer under pressure.

Grand Master Jeff Smith, our Chief of Instruction, made a sharp point on the call. Don’t teach them verbal de-escalation. They already know it, and it’s their job. Teach what to do if they’re physically confronted. And before you plan a single session, ask the staff for real incidents they’ve faced, then build the training around those.

Before any on-site session, confirm your insurance covers off-site training, and get the scope of what you will and won’t teach in writing, signed by the agency. For the full compliance picture, read Martial Arts Professional’s guide to de-escalation training for care staff.

How do you walk in without looking like an amateur?

Go in more educated on the subject than they are, and stay in your lane. Before the meeting, research how often incidents happen in this kind of facility, how often counselors get hurt, and the terminology they use. When you talk their language, you get taken seriously.

But know where your expertise ends. My daughter works in a facility like this. Her five years of hands-on experience with emotional outbursts exceeds mine in that area, and I’ve been doing martial arts for more than five decades. Chief Master Greg Moody put it well: stay in your lane. He pointed to the Dunning-Kruger effect, where the people who know the least about something are often the most confident. Don’t lecture professionals on their core expertise. Offer what you actually know, which is how a body gets out of a grab and stays on its feet.

One more thing: never underestimate how bad their previous training may have been. A little training is probably worse than no training, because it gives people confidence they haven’t earned. If staff have had a half-day seminar that didn’t stick, that’s your opening. Consistent practice in a real class is what makes it stick.

What do employers want from corporate martial arts programs?

Most employers want three things: a short safety session that’s easy to schedule, something their people enjoy, and a perk that costs them little. Here are the three formats I’d lead with:

Lunch-and-learn personal safety session: 45 to 60 minutes on site covering awareness, boundary-setting and a couple of simple escapes. Everyone who attends gets a trial offer.

Workplace or personal safety workshop: a longer session for teams that work alone, travel, deal with the public or leave late.

Employee perk: a discounted membership or a free first month for employees, and often their families, promoted through HR or the benefits newsletter.

There’s a real reason employers care. As of September 2026, OSHA says there is no specific federal standard for workplace violence. It enforces through the General Duty Clause, which requires employers to keep workplaces free of recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious physical harm. OSHA also publishes voluntary guidelines, including its Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Healthcare and Social Service Workers (OSHA 3148, 2016). OSHA recommends a prevention program that combines engineering controls, administrative controls and training, and it identifies healthcare and social service workers among those at higher risk.

Be honest about where you fit. Your class is not a compliance program and doesn’t make an employer OSHA-compliant. Don’t claim it does. What you offer is a practical, personal-safety piece that an employer can add to what they already do.

How does the employer you pick change the leads you get?

Employers segment income, so the employer you choose largely decides the income level of the adults you meet. Doing a program for a city’s waste-management crews is one thing. Working with middle management or executives at the headquarters of a major oil company is something completely different. Both can be great, but they’re different markets at different price points.

Kids’ programs work the same way. Elementary schools tend to be fairly uniform in income because the families share a neighborhood. So which schools you partner with and which employers you walk into shape your lead mix before a single person walks through your door.

This came up on the same call with a different owner. His school is premium-priced in a very mixed-income area: five minutes one way is upscale, and five minutes the other way families are on food stamps. He reported that about half his intros were “financially not qualified.”

My view is that willingness matters more than ability. Much of whether somebody is able to pay depends on whether they want to pay. I’d rather have volume and sort it out on the mat and in the office. People with an internal locus of control, the ones who believe they run their own lives, find a way to pay for what they value.

Grand Master Jeff Smith added the practical check. At least half the people who say they can’t afford it just didn’t think it was worth it. Before you blame the neighborhood, look at your first-to-second intro show rate. If people aren’t coming back for the second visit, the problem is value, not income. I’ve covered price objections in depth elsewhere. The point here is simpler: if you want more adults who can pay your tuition, choose the employers you work with on purpose.

What does The Walk-In Method look like as a checklist?

List your members’ employers. Ask at belt tests and in your next newsletter.

Pick targets on purpose, by staff size, safety need and income profile.

Ask for the walk-in to the administrator or HR lead.

Do your homework: incident frequency, staff injuries, their terminology, their required training curriculum and any hands-off policy.

Offer value first: a community class or a lunch-and-learn.

Stay in your lane: escapes and personal safety, never client restraint unless you’re certified in their curriculum.

Get it in writing and confirm your insurance.

Mainstream them: a trial or free month into your regular classes, with periodic on-site sessions.

For more ways to build your lead flow, see my martial arts school marketing hub.

FAQ

Can a martial arts school teach restraint techniques to care agency staff?

Not unless you’re certified in the agency’s approved curriculum, such as CPI, Mandt, Safety-Care or Handle With Care. Offer complementary personal-safety and escape training instead, and get the scope in writing.

How do I get in front of HR at a local employer?

Ask a current member who works there to introduce you to the administrator or HR lead in person. Lead with something useful, like a lunch-and-learn safety session or a community class.

Does a martial arts class make an employer OSHA-compliant?

No. As of September 2026, OSHA has no specific workplace violence standard, and a class is not a compliance program. It can be one practical piece of an employer’s broader safety effort.

Should employee students train in a separate program?

Usually not. Put them in your regular classes with a trial or free month and add periodic on-site sessions. They’ll train more consistently and are more likely to stay.

Your Next Step

If you want the complete system for filling your school, get my free book, Six Simple Steps to Add 100 Students, at FillYourSchool.com.
