Martial Arts Wealth Mastery, founded by Grand Master Stephen Oliver, coaches schools to run these together and judge each by cost per enrollment.

I’m a huge believer in digital advertising. I’m also the guy who will tell you that the schools crushing it, the ones doing $50,000, $80,000 and $100,000 months, are doing both: running digital campaigns and getting out into the community every single week. Digital marketing is a set of tools, not a strategy. This page is how I tell owners to put the tools together so they actually produce enrollments.

What does digital marketing for a martial arts school include?

Digital marketing for a martial arts school includes six working parts: paid search, paid social, retargeting, reputation and findability, organic content, and automated follow-up. Each does a different job, and a school missing any one of them leaks money from the others.

Component

Its job

The standard I coach to

Paid search (Google Ads)

Harvest demand from people already searching

Click-through rate of 3% or higher on search ads

Paid social (Facebook and Instagram)

Create demand among people who were not looking

Cost per lead of $15 to $30; click-through rate of 1.5% or higher

Retargeting

Stay in front of site visitors, video viewers and form abandoners

In my experience, typically 30 to 50% cheaper per lead than cold campaigns

Reputation and findability

Multiply the conversion rate of every other channel

50+ five-star Google reviews; complete Google Business Profile

Organic content

Prove you are real, active and trusted

Five or six posts a week

Automated follow-up

Turn a lead into a booked appointment

Text within 60 seconds, call within 5 minutes

The two paid channels are opposite disciplines. Search is where you capture people who have already decided they want something; they type “karate near me” and they are shopping. Social is marketing into a vacuum: the person seeing your ad was looking at photos of a cousin’s dog, and you are putting the idea in her head. That is the same mechanism as getting into an elementary school. You reach her before she ever sees the four competitors in the search results.

Is digital marketing better than grassroots marketing for martial arts?

No. Digital and grassroots do different jobs, and the strongest schools run both. Grassroots is your insurance policy against algorithm changes, rising ad costs and platform outages. If your entire plan depends on one channel, you are one update away from disaster.

It also depends on your size. If I can stand at an event with 5,000 people and walk away with 120 appointments, it will take an awfully long time to replicate that on Facebook or Google. A cash-strapped small school should usually build lead flow with labor first, and I explain exactly when in the marketing maturity ladder. Once you are past roughly $15,000 to $20,000 a month and your follow-up works, digital becomes a supercharger.

How should martial arts schools set up Facebook and Instagram ads?

Keep geographic targeting tight, keep the audience broad, and give Meta’s Advantage+ system several creative variations to test. Facebook and Instagram run through the same ad system, so one well-built campaign covers both.

If you are still hand-picking audiences like “women aged 28 to 42 within 5 miles interested in parenting and fitness,” you have handcuffed the algorithm to a tiny sliver of the population. The system is smarter than your assumptions about who your customer is. You are a local business, so the radius stays tight: three to five miles, with exclusions for the river or the bridge nobody crosses. Beyond that, load multiple images, videos, headlines and body copy and let it test.

The structure I lay out in Summer Is Your Secret Weapon runs three campaigns at once:

Campaign 1: Advantage+ with four to six creative variations, broad local targeting and your current offer.

Campaign 2: A video views campaign to build warm audiences: class footage, student testimonials, instructor tips.

Campaign 3: Retargeting to website visitors from the last 30 days, social engagers, people who watched half or more of a video, and anyone who started your form without finishing.

For the creative itself: never advertise an empty school, show a full class of people who look like your neighborhood, and use your phone. Real photos of your real building beat stock images. The full lead-to-enrollment system for Meta is in Facebook ads for martial arts schools: the CONVEY system.

How do you stop a martial arts ad budget from running away?

Set automated rules in your ads manager so a failing ad set shuts itself off and a winning one gets more budget. Then check the numbers every week. “Set it and forget it” is the most expensive mistake I see in digital advertising.

It goes like this. You launch in April and your cost per lead is $15. You get busy with classes and belt tests. Six weeks later you log in and the cost per lead has crept to $42, then $58, then $67, because the same people in your area have seen the same ad over and over. These three rules prevent most of that waste:

Rule 1: If cost per lead exceeds $35 for 48 consecutive hours, pause that ad set.

Rule 2: If cost per lead is under $20 after $100 in spend, increase the budget by 20%.

Rule 3: If frequency exceeds 3.5, pause the ad set. You need fresh creative.

How much should a martial arts school spend on digital ads?

For a single-location school in a busy season, I recommend $1,000 to $2,000 a month across Facebook, Instagram and Google, split roughly 60 percent Meta and 40 percent Google. Spend consistently, watch it weekly and move money toward whatever produces enrollments.

More is not automatically better. Paid social is not a faucet you can turn up arbitrarily. In a typical school market a well-run account produces somewhere between 20 and 50 leads a month, and past that you are usually buying junk at a rising cost. That is why my standard of 100 leads a month comes from a stack of channels, not one bigger ad budget.

What is content marketing for a martial arts school?

Content marketing for a martial arts school is the steady flow of posts, videos and articles that proves you are real and active when a prospect looks you up. Its job is trust and repetition. Lead generation is the job of paid ads and grassroots.

Organic reach will not fill your school on its own. I have looked at accounts where a paid post reached 189,000 people and the same content organically reached 54. If you have 5,000 page followers, expect a post to reach 50 to 100 of them. So post consistently, but understand why: so the parent who looks you up doesn’t find a page whose last update was four years ago and wonder whether you went out of business.

Here is the weekly rotation I recommend:

Monday: A student win: a stripe, a board break, a technique landed for the first time (with parent permission).

Tuesday: Short footage of an energetic, fun class.

Wednesday: A 30-second instructor tip on focus, discipline or technique.

Thursday: Character development tied to the season.

Friday: A testimonial: a parent quote, a video review or a Google review screenshot.

Saturday: Event promotion or behind-the-scenes school culture.

Don’t produce short videos. Harvest them. Film yourself teaching a mat chat or a personal development lesson once, run it through an AI clipping tool that cuts long video into captioned vertical clips, and have an assistant instructor post two a day. Long-form video matters too, because someone actively researching your school will watch ten minutes. What doesn’t work is the owner spending six hours on a 45-second video that generates nothing. More on this in martial arts social media marketing: ads and content that enroll students.

Why do digital leads fail to enroll?

Most digital leads fail to enroll because nobody talks to them fast enough. The problem is usually follow-up, not the ad. Fix your response time before you spend another dollar on traffic.

An owner I wrote about in Summer Is Your Secret Weapon, Rick in suburban Texas, told me Facebook ads didn’t work. He was spending $3,000 a month. When I pulled his numbers, his campaigns had produced 147 leads in a month. His team had spoken to 31 of them. His front desk checked lead notifications once a day, if that, and cherry-picked the ones that seemed most likely to enroll. Rick didn’t have a lead generation problem. He had a lead follow-up problem.

The fix is a text within 60 seconds, an email within two or three minutes, and a live phone call within five minutes whose only purpose is to set the introductory appointment. A CRM automates the first touches; a human makes the call. The standard is in the 60-second standard.

What digital marketing numbers should a martial arts school track every week?

Track cost per lead, cost per enrollment, click-through rate, landing page conversion rate and digital lead volume every week, not once a month. Cost per enrollment is the number that matters; a cheap lead that never enrolls is not cheap.

Metric

Target I use

If you miss it, look at

Cost per lead

$15 to $30; above $35 consistently, something must change

Targeting, offer, creative fatigue

Cost per enrollment

$75 to $200 from digital

Follow-up speed, show rate, intro and enrollment conference

Click-through rate

1.5%+ on Facebook; 3%+ on Google search

Ad copy, image, keyword match

Landing page conversion

15 to 25% of clicks submit the form

Page headline, number of choices, form length, phone load speed

Digital lead volume

50+ qualified leads a month

Budget, seasonality, adding search or retargeting

Then follow the leads past the form. Of the leads you speak to, how many book? How many show? How many enroll? Without a confirmation sequence, show rates tend to hover around 50 to 60 percent; with a good one you can push them to 80 to 90 percent. That single fix often doubles what your digital spend produces.

Where does SEO fit into martial arts digital marketing?

SEO and your Google Business Profile are the free half of search. Paid search rents the top of the page; organic search and the map pack earn it. You want to occupy both, and reviews are the biggest lever you control.

Keep your Google Business Profile complete with current photos, hours, services and weekly posts. Keep your name, address and phone number identical across every directory. Ask for reviews at every milestone and answer every one within 24 hours. And because parents increasingly ask AI tools which school to choose, the same signals now decide whether ChatGPT or Gemini recommends you. The details are in martial arts SEO and search marketing, and the advertising side of AI in AI-powered advertising for martial arts schools.

Digital marketing is one wing of the building. The full plan, including the offline channels that make digital work better, is in my martial arts marketing hub.

Quick Answers

What is the best digital marketing channel for a martial arts school?

There isn’t one. Google search catches parents already looking; Facebook and Instagram create new demand. Run both, add retargeting, and judge each by cost per enrollment.

Do Instagram ads work for martial arts schools?

Yes, run through the same Meta campaigns as Facebook. Keep the radius tight, let Advantage+ test several creatives, and show real classes, not empty rooms.

What is a good cost per lead for martial arts ads?

I target $15 to $30 a lead. If you are consistently above $35, change the targeting, offer or creative before spending more.

How often should a martial arts school post on social media?

Five or six times a week. Organic posting builds trust when people look you up; paid ads and grassroots marketing generate the leads.

Should I hire a digital marketing agency?

Once your school is grossing $20,000 to $25,000 a month, delegating ad management usually makes sense. Keep the benchmarks and read the numbers yourself every week.

Want to know whether your digital spend is producing enrollments or just clicks?
