A martial arts website that leads with style, lineage and the owner’s biography fails that job, however good it looks.

I have been buying traffic for martial arts schools since before there was an internet to buy it on. I have reviewed more school websites than I can count, including a room full of them at a NAPMA event where I put every pre-registered school’s site up on the screen. Most were scary. A couple were mediocre. The rest were horrible. This page is what I tell owners to fix, in the order I tell them to fix it.

What is a martial arts school website actually for?

A martial arts school website for prospects has a very limited purpose: get a high percentage of visitors to share their contact information, then get a high percentage of those people to schedule a free or paid introductory class. Everything else on the site either helps that or gets in the way.

I wrote this years ago in The Way of the Mile High Maverick and it has not changed. You actually have two websites, whether you built them that way or not. The first is for your current students: the calendar, the testing requirements, the handouts, the event photos. That site serves your raving fans. The second is for prospects, and I have rarely seen it done well.

The prospect site has the same purpose as an information call. The parent needs to know little or nothing about your style, your schedule, your curriculum or your lineage, unless knowing it helps her give you her contact information and book a class. Most schools mash the two sites together and end up with a student resource page that strangers bounce off.

Why do most martial arts websites fail?

Most martial arts websites fail because they are written for martial artists, not for the mother of a seven-year-old. They talk about Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do or MMA, they tell the owner’s life story, and they make no real effort to capture a name and phone number.

When I reviewed those websites in front of the room, I irritated a few people by pointing out that no one cares. A mother doesn’t want to read about Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do, MMA or any other iteration. She wants to hear about benefits, see feedback from other parents and have an easy way to learn more.

I walked one owner through her own site. I asked who her students were. About 60 percent kids and 40 percent adults, and about half of those adults came in with their kids. So I asked her to look at her home page as a soccer mom of a seven-year-old girl. What does that mom think about the school patch with a knife and a sword on it? About the photo of two kids sparring, one kicking the other in the knee? About a long list of styles she has never heard of? You get the picture.

Forget your preconceptions. Look at the site as a parent who knows nothing about martial arts but is ready to start lessons, and as an adult prospect who is nervous about walking in the door.

What should a martial arts website home page show?

A martial arts website home page should show a full class of happy people who look like your neighborhood, state the benefit a parent is buying, prove it with real reviews and full-name testimonials, and give one obvious way to raise a hand. It should not show an empty room.

Here are the rules I give our members for images and proof:

Never advertise an empty school. I have seen beautiful sites that are a slow walkthrough of an immaculate, empty facility. Nobody cares about your mats or your banners. An empty room says exactly one thing, and it is not the thing you want.

Show a full class. A professional-looking instructor, students smiling, action happening, and enough bodies in the frame that it reads as busy. The prospect needs to see herself or her child in that photo.

Use an establishing shot. An exterior view looking through the windows into a full class does two jobs. It shows the room is packed, and it teaches people what your building looks like from the street.

Your phone is good enough. Real photos of your real school consistently beat stock images, because prospects recognize the building.

Use full names on testimonials. “Susan Smith, RN, whose seven-year-old son has been in our program for three years” is far more credible than initials. People assume initials are made up. Video of a real person is the most credible format, then audio, then a written testimonial with a photo.

Show your review count. When someone sees your ad, they go look you up. A line like “168 five-star Google reviews” with rotating testimonials answers the “are these people real?” question before it is asked.

Privacy is easy to handle. Shoot from the back of the room, ask anyone who doesn’t want to be photographed to step off the floor, or put photo permission in your enrollment agreement so it is handled once.

Should a martial arts website post the class schedule?

Not on any page built to generate leads. A full schedule of beginner, intermediate, advanced, black belt, kids and adult classes confuses a new parent and hands her a reason to wander off before she ever talks to you.

When a parent calls and asks about times, you don’t read off Monday this, Tuesday that. You say, “We have classes six days a week, afternoons and evenings, and your child only needs a couple a week, so there’s plenty of flexibility.” The conversation is where scheduling belongs. Your current students can find the full schedule on the student side of the site. I go deeper on this in whether your martial arts school should post its class schedule online.

What is the difference between a martial arts website and a landing page?

A website lets someone who already knows you find something specific. A landing page converts a stranger who arrived forty seconds ago with one interest. They are opposite jobs, and blurring them gives you a page that browses well and enrolls badly.

Question

School website

Landing page

Who is it for?

Current students, families checking you out, people searching your name

A stranger who just clicked one ad, flyer code or partner email

Navigation

Yes: programs, location, instructors, contact

None. No top menu, no footer menu, no social icons

Number of destinations

Many

Exactly one, repeated down the page

Class schedule

On the student side

Never

Form fields

Short contact form

Three: name, email, phone

How people reach it

Search, your name, your sign, word of mouth

Only from the thing that promised the offer

Job

Corroborate your credibility

Capture the lead and book the class

One of the most expensive mistakes I see is driving paid ads to the home page. I can spot it instantly because of the navigation links across the top. On a dedicated landing page I want as few distractions as possible: call the school (my first preference) or fill out the form. The full page-by-page fix is in the Six-Drain Audit for martial arts school landing pages.

What should happen after someone fills out the form?

After someone fills out the form, the very next screen should either invite them to call you right now, with a click-to-call number that rings a real phone, or let them pick an appointment time on a calendar. “We’ll reach out to you” is the worst sentence you can put there.

So many schools end the process with what amounts to “do nothing, we’ll call you.” Then nobody calls for a day. That is why I wrote “We’ll Get Back to You” is the most expensive sentence on your website.

Two more sequencing rules. Even on a paid trial, capture the lead before the credit card: first name, last name, email and phone, then the next page reserves the trial. Plenty of people abandon a shopping cart, and if you only have an abandoned cart you have nothing to follow up on. And whatever the form says, a human being should be talking to that person fast. My standard is a text within 60 seconds and a phone call within five minutes.

Does the phone matter more than the website?

The website and the phone are one system. The website earns the call or the form, and the phone books the appointment. A great site connected to a phone nobody answers is a very expensive brochure.

Before that same NAPMA event, Bob Dunne and Toby Milroy placed information calls to the pre-registered schools while I reviewed their websites. I don’t have the exact count in front of me, but it was something like 20 calls placed and 17 not answered. Two of the three that did answer chased a rat hole about the merits of their style and never asked for a name, number and appointment.

Here is what I have tracked for years in my own schools: moms call about lessons for their kids mostly between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., Monday through Thursday. And from NAPMA’s own outbound calls, most schools do not answer their phones before 4 p.m. Put those two facts together and you can see where a lot of website leads go to die. Answer the phone in the morning, or route it to someone who will.

How does a martial arts website get found on Google and in AI answers?

A martial arts website gets found through a complete Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, consistent name, address and phone number everywhere you are listed, and pages that answer the questions parents actually search. Design alone does nothing for findability.

My standard is 50 or more five-star Google reviews. Not twenty. Not thirty. When a parent searches “martial arts near me” and sees one school with 147 reviews at 4.9 stars next to another with 12 reviews at 4.2, she knows who she is calling first. Keep your Google Business Profile current with photos, hours, services and weekly posts, and make sure every directory listing shows the same name, address and phone number. Inconsistent listings hurt your local rankings.

For the search and AI side in detail, read martial arts SEO and search marketing and technical SEO and schema that makes your school findable by AI. The reviews system itself is in how to get more Google reviews for a martial arts school.

Why does the website matter even when the lead came from somewhere else?

Because people check you out before they call. A large share of the people who click a paid social ad leave and look you up separately, and from offline touches like a booth, a flyer or a school demonstration the share is even higher. Your website is where that detour lands.

In the numbers we were seeing in one of our member marketing sessions, roughly four in ten paid-social prospects went looking for corroboration, and closer to eight in ten from offline touches. I do it myself: I see a Facebook ad, open the main website and check the Google, Facebook and Yelp reviews to decide if a business is legit. One of our members had prospects tell him they didn’t think his school was real until they got on the phone.

That means a stale site costs you leads you will never see. If your landing page offers two weeks and a uniform and your home page still advertises a summer camp that ended fourteen months ago, you won on the page and lost her on the detour.

What does a martial arts website need on a phone?

On a phone, the headline should be readable in about three seconds on cell data, the phone number should be tappable, the form should be three fields that don’t hide the submit button, and no pop-up should cover the offer before it is read.

Effectively all of your paid social traffic is a thumb on a small screen. Test it the honest way: your own phone, cell data, standing outside the building. A desktop page that shrinks to fit is not a phone page. It is a desktop page in a smaller box.

How do you audit your martial arts website this week?

Run your site through the checklist below. Every “no” is a leak. Fix them in this order, because the top items cost you the most.

#

Check

Pass standard

1

Does every ad, QR code and flyer land on a dedicated page, not the home page?

Yes, one offer per page

2

Does the home page headline name a benefit a parent wants?

Focus, confidence, fitness or safety, not lineage

3

Is the main image a full class of real students?

No empty rooms, no stock photos, no weapons

4

Is there one obvious way to raise a hand?

Tappable phone number plus a short form

5

How many form fields?

Three on landing pages

6

What happens after submit?

Call-now button or self-scheduling, never “we’ll reach out”

7

How fast does a human respond?

Text within 60 seconds, call within 5 minutes

8

Are testimonials full-name, with identifiers?

Yes; video first

9

How many Google reviews?

50 or more five-star reviews

10

Is anything on the site out of date?

No expired offers or old events

If you want the whole growth system this page plugs into, start with my martial arts marketing hub. A perfect website with nothing pointed at it is still an empty school.

Quick Answers

What makes a good martial arts website?

A good martial arts website turns visitors into booked introductory classes. It leads with benefits, shows a full class of real students, proves itself with reviews and full-name testimonials, and gives one obvious way to call or fill out a short form.

Should my martial arts website talk about my style and lineage?

Not on the pages built for prospects. A parent cares about what martial arts will do for her child. Lineage and style are things she’ll be glad to learn after she raises her hand.

Do I need a landing page if I already have a website?

Yes, for every paid offer. Keep the website for people who already know you and build a separate, navigation-free page for each ad or flyer offer.

How many fields should my website form have?

Three on a landing page: name, email and phone. Ask for anything else on the confirmation page or in the phone call.

How many Google reviews does a martial arts school need?

My standard is 50 or more five-star reviews, with every review answered within 24 hours.

Want a second set of eyes on your site and your numbers?
