Last week I talked with ten martial arts school owners from all over the country. Several lamented the economy and explained — very articulately — why it’s impossible for “someone like them” to make a living right now. On the very same day, several others told me they were hitting all-time records. Same week. Same economy. Opposite results. The difference almost always comes down to one thing: an abundance mindset<\/strong> versus a scarcity mindset.<\/p>\n

You Get What You Expect<\/h2>\n

Tony Robbins talks about choosing your “delusion.” What he means is that you can often choose a belief about a set of circumstances that supports your success — or one that guarantees your failure. Objectively, neither may be strictly true. So if you get to pick a belief that helps you or one that harms you, which would you choose?<\/p>\n

You can believe we’re in a marvelously recession-resistant industry, where people turn to fitness, confidence and personal development precisely when times get hard. There’s plenty of evidence for it. Or you can believe no one will pay for martial arts lessons and it’s a great time to throw in the towel. I’ll guarantee you this: you’ll get what you expect and see what you believe.<\/p>\n

Plenty of Schools Are Thriving Right Now<\/h2>\n

While some owners were melting down, here’s what was happening at schools that chose abundance: one Mile High Karate school enrolled 15 new students in the first week and a half of May. Another did 17 in two weeks. Another generated 200 leads and 65 introductory appointments from a single event. There is enormous opportunity in any economy — often more than ever. The owners capturing it aren’t luckier; they’re working smarter and refusing to adopt a losing belief.<\/p>\n

Refocus on What Actually Drives Growth<\/h2>\n

Mindset without action is just a pep talk. So here’s where I’d point that abundance energy first.<\/p>\n

Priority #1: Internal Events That Create Referrals<\/h3>\n

Run every internal promotion you can — birthday parties, buddy days, themed events, and invitations to all friends and family for every belt graduation. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: I’ve spoken with owners who had no idea what was actually happening in their schools. You cannot manage what you don’t measure.
