Look at any industry and you’ll find roughly the same split: about 5% are big winners, 15% are solid winners, and 80% land in the mediocre-or-worse majority. In a typical year that means a few hundred top-level martial arts schools, a few thousand good ones, and many thousands just getting by — with thousands going out of business. The question that matters is which group you’re in, and the habits that separate winners from the mediocre majority<\/strong> are remarkably consistent.<\/p>\n

The Four Habits of the Strugglers<\/h2>\n

1. They invest only in technical skills.<\/strong> Low-performing owners will happily spend 10, 15, or 20 hours a week perfecting their own martial arts and fly to Brazil or China to train — but invest almost nothing in the marketing, sales, teaching, and management skills their business actually needs. Your technical knowledge matters; it just isn’t what grows a school.<\/p>\n

2. They discount proven systems with excuses.<\/strong> “That’s a big-city idea, it won’t work in my town.” “That’s East Coast, this is the Midwest.” “That’s Tae Kwon Do, I teach BJJ.” They find a reason every proven idea won’t apply to them — then do nothing.<\/p>\n

3. They want everything for free.<\/strong> Spend time on the free discussion boards and social-media groups and you’ll find owners hunting for free advice and unwilling to pay for quality training. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for — and free information is very often worth exactly that. Stewart Brand’s famous observation captured the tension perfectly: information simultaneously wants to be expensive (because the right insight changes your life) and free (because it’s cheap to copy). The trap is assuming the free version is the valuable one.<\/p>\n

4. They’re limited by their own beliefs.<\/strong> Most owners cap themselves at a level they’ve quietly decided they’re capable of. They’ll watch others run $500,000 or $1,000,000 schools and still get stuck at $100,000 — not because of the market, but because of the belief they’ve internalized and never changed.<\/p>\n

“There’s Nothing New” Is Half True — and Half an Excuse<\/h2>\n

Some veterans love to claim there’s nothing new in this business. Here’s the nuance. One of the best marketing books ever written, Claude Hopkins’ Scientific Advertising<\/em>, came out in 1923; David Ogilvy’s classic in the 1980s. So yes — many core concepts are decades old. But if you haven’t read those books and applied them to a martial arts school through real testing, the concepts are brand new… to you, and to 99% of owners. Meanwhile, genuinely new things are<\/em> happening — in internet marketing and in modern teaching methodology especially — and ignoring them because “the old ways are good enough” is its own kind of failure.<\/p>\n

An expert once framed it for me beautifully: it may not be a secret to you, but if the student doesn’t know or understand it, then it’s certainly a secret to them<\/em>. There absolutely are subtle distinctions the top 1% know and apply that the other 99% have never been taught — and those distinctions are the whole difference between mediocrity and success.<\/p>\n

What the Winners Actually Did<\/h2>\n

The coaching clients who jumped from $15,000 to $30,000 in 90 days — or to $50,000 and beyond — had one thing in common: they implemented<\/em>. They took direction on faith, didn’t hunt for reasons it wouldn’t work, and didn’t let their staff get in the way. The specific sequence that got them there: keep good statistics, raise prices, add an upgrade process, run a renewal blitz among existing students, fix the enrollment process, increase down payments and monthly tuition, and then open the floodgates on introductory traffic.
