One of the single most effective things I ever did was buy an ad in the community recreation center flyers. Every time I tell an owner that, they look at me a little funny and say, “Why would they run your ad? They already have a Taekwondo class.” Here is what they are missing \u2014 and why this is some of the cheapest, best-targeted advertising you can buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the rec center will happily run your ad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the rec center offers its own martial arts class. But the people selling the ads in that circular do not care about the programming. What they care about is amortizing the cost of producing and mailing the flyer. Your ad dollars help them cover the print run, so they will happily take your money and run your ad right there in the same booklet as their own class \u2014 because the person selling the ad space is not the person protecting the Taekwondo program. Once you understand that, a door most owners assume is closed swings wide open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I used to run the Chuck Norris ad that I had permission to use \u2014 “karate’s the best thing you can do for your child,” with a testimonial. A full page whenever I could get it, in all the local rec-center flyers. If all they offer you is a listing, take the listing \u2014 but list an introductory program, not just “martial arts classes.” And if they physically mail the circular, buy a display ad on top of the listing. If I could get the back cover, I would buy the back cover, assuming it was halfway reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is how cheap this was. The Jefferson County circular had a north edition and a south edition, and I think I was buying into a run of about 30,000 mailed pieces. I could never quite get the back cover, but I could get a full page for something like $300. For that kind of distribution, that is well worthwhile \u2014 some of the cheapest advertising I could get anywhere, going straight into local mailboxes in the exact neighborhoods I wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $47 intro and the flip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whatever the offer is, run something like a month for $47. Any introductory offer you run converts exactly the same way. So when they come in, it sounds like this: “Ms. Michelle, it is normally $800 to register. Since you came in from the rec-center circular and already donated $47 to the community center, we give you a $400 discount. So it is just $400 and then the first month.” And you flip them right then and there, on the first or second lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It genuinely does not matter what the offer is \u2014 three months, two months, one month, two weeks, or two lessons. You flip them on the first or second lesson, and the logic is exactly the same every single time. The circular just gets them in the door as a warm, local, pre-qualified lead who has already taken an action and put a little money down. Your enrollment process<\/a> does the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do both \u2014 the listing and the display ad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the directory lists the classes, get your introductory program into the listing. And if you can also buy a display ad in the same physical mailer, do both. The listing is free visibility and the display ad is cheap reach, so stack them. Between the two, you are showing up in a trusted local booklet that lands in tens of thousands of mailboxes for a few hundred dollars \u2014 and every response walks in already halfway sold. That is why, after all these years and all the fancy new channels, the rec-center circular is still one of the best advertising bargains a martial arts school owner can find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
