In this industry, everybody is always chasing the next bright, shiny object. Right now that object is AI, and I want to plant a flag on it before we go one step further: AI is going to have a massive, dramatic impact on how you run your martial arts school \u2014 probably bigger and faster than the internet did. But it is not going to replace the three things your business is actually built on. Let me draw that line clearly, because the owners who get this right are going to win, and the ones who get it backwards are going to waste a fortune of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every bright, shiny object promises to replace you \u2014 and none of them ever do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have watched this movie a dozen times. When VHS tapes got popular, everybody ran out and put their whole curriculum on tape, convinced that was how people were going to learn martial arts. Tae Bo was sold on VHS. During COVID it was that door-sized mirror device \u2014 basically Peloton for anything that was not a bike \u2014 where you would watch the class in the mirror and shadowbox along. When 4K TVs and streaming got good, everybody swore it would kill the movie theaters. And here is what we learned every single time: people want human interaction. The movie theater survives because it is a communal, social experience. Learning martial arts from a robot is no more appealing than learning it on Zoom from a real human being during the pandemic was \u2014 and we all saw how much people loved that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not see an Optimus robot \u2014 or anybody else’s robot \u2014 putting on a uniform and teaching your class anytime soon. So what is never going to change? Teaching is never going to change. Human-to-human relationship building is never going to change. And people wanting a real human being in front of them for support when they need it is never going to change. The risk of any of this replacing us rounds to zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martial arts is a relationship business, not a $25 gym membership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here is the distinction that matters. If you are selling a $25-a-month, bottom-of-the-basement gym membership that the average person pays for and never uses, sure \u2014 you could probably automate that entire sale online. But that is not our business. We are selling a significant activity, tied to a significant goal the person actually wants to achieve, and that requires a human conversation. We are in a relationship business, and a relationship requires a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at how the pros do it. I set up a gym membership for my son at 24 Hour Fitness recently. They have a wall of salespeople and a bunch of high-top tables up front \u2014 and yet all the memberships are done online. You pick the $25 tier or the $35 tier yourself. So what are all those salespeople actually doing? They are selling the personal training packages \u2014 the pricier, higher-value stuff. When it comes to the things that are more expensive and more meaningful, they are still doing it belly-to-belly, person to person, on three-, six-, nine-, and twelve-month prepaid terms. The expensive, life-changing decision still gets a human being. Yours should too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The martial artist’s fantasy: “I just teach, and the website does the selling”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every few years I watch owners fall in love with the same fantasy: I am the master teacher, I am on the floor, and all the selling happens on my website before anyone ever walks in. I never have to deal with money, I never have to talk about money, all I have to do is teach. I have asked this of my whole coaching team \u2014 Jeff Smith, Greg Moody, and Bob Dunne, who between us have talked to more martial arts schools than probably all the other coaches in the industry combined \u2014 has anybody ever seen someone do a great job of making a real enrollment without talking to a human being? The answer is no. Not for a program that matters. Automate the $25 impulse buy if you like. But the enrollment that changes a kid’s life and pays your mortgage? That is a conversation, and it always will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So where does AI actually fit? Anything you touch on a computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here is the clean way to think about it. Right now, AI is not really “out in the world” \u2014 outside of the Teslas driving around, it lives in your desktop and your laptop. So ask yourself: what do you sit down and do on a computer to run your school? The books at night. Organizing your lead follow-up. Pulling your numbers together. Every one of those things AI can take over \u2014 sometimes 70 percent of it, sometimes 80 percent, and sometimes 100 percent \u2014 and often more effectively and more human-like than the old software ever did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it should not do is the human part. Recognizing a student’s birthday or anniversary with real, felt warmth; making a student feel genuinely missed and welcomed back; building the rapport that keeps a family enrolled for years \u2014 you want human beings doing that. Let AI facilitate it. Have it trigger the reminder, even fire off a direct-mail piece with a handwritten-style font. But the warmth itself stays human. AI is there to handle the keyboard work so that you are freed up to go do the relationship work \u2014 including your lead follow-up<\/a> and your enrollment conversations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trap: do not let the tool suck you off the floor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here is my blunt warning, and I have watched it sink schools. The failing owners I see are fixated on their laptop, spending three or four hours a day fooling around with this stuff. The successful ones make sure no student ever falls through the cracks and they build real human relationships \u2014 and during the day they are out. They are visiting the principal and the PE teacher at the local elementary school. They are in the HR department of the biggest employer in town setting up a deal. They are setting up host-parasite cross-promotions with the retailers around them. They are hunting for live events to work. They are building the relationship with the AMC and Regal so they are set up for the next Spider-Man the way they would have been for Toy Story. AI, exactly like the internet and social media before it, can become a massive time-suck that is wildly disproportionate to the results it produces. Never step over dollars to pick up pennies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So use AI aggressively for everything that happens on a screen \u2014 the follow-up, the data, the admin. But protect the three things it will never replace: your teaching, your relationships, and the human enrollment conversation. Get that division of labor right and AI becomes the biggest force multiplier your school has ever had. Get it backwards and it becomes the most expensive distraction in your building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
