A member brought me a frustration this week that I hear constantly: “We do birthday parties, but we get no traction. One kid had zero friends show up. Another brought two \u2014 and both were already enrolled in taekwondo across town.”<\/p>
He assumed something was wrong with his parties. Nothing was wrong with his parties. Something was wrong with whose<\/em> parties he was throwing, and when<\/em> he was booking them.<\/p> Here’s the counterintuitive fact underneath the whole thing: with rare exceptions, your referrals come from first-year students \u2014 and the vast majority come from white belts.<\/strong><\/p> We all instinctively look at our brown belts and black belts and think, “They’ve been with us for years, they love us \u2014 they should be our best referral source.” But by the time a student reaches advanced rank, one of two things is true about their friends: they’re already enrolled in your school, or they’re sick to death of hearing about martial arts. Either way, the well is dry.<\/p> The brand-new student is the opposite. Their entire circle of friends has never been in your building. And \u2014 this is the part people miss \u2014 their enthusiasm is at its absolute lifetime peak the day they enroll. It’s like buying the new car: you show it off to everybody for three weeks, and six months later it hasn’t seen a car wash. Nobody evangelizes like a two-week-old white belt family.<\/p> So if your birthday parties are drawing from students who’ve been with you three years, of course five kids show up and all five are already your students. Why are you even bothering?<\/p> Here’s the system, and it’s the whole system:<\/p> Every new student, on the day they enroll, leaves with a party on the calendar.<\/strong> If their birthday falls in the next three or four months, you book the birthday party right there in the enrollment conference. If it doesn’t, you book a pizza party<\/em> instead \u2014 a celebration of their first belt \u2014 and you can still put the October birthday on the books too.<\/p> Not a coupon in the folder. Not a banner in the lobby. A booked date. Because here’s what happens to owners who “launch” birthday parties with signs, flyers, and announcements: nobody ever asks about them, and they can’t figure out why they can’t book any. Parents ignore banners. Parents ignore announcements. That’s universal. You book parties one way \u2014 face to face, at the moment of maximum excitement, with the calendar open.<\/p>Referrals Come From White Belts, Not Black Belts<\/h2>
