It’s four structural decisions — and once they’re in place, parent enrollment stops being a promotion you run and becomes something your school simply produces.

Decision #1: You don’t have kids classes. You have family classes.

Every kids class becomes a family class. The adult classes stay adult — the 28-year-old who walks in to learn Muay Thai should never be dropped into a class of six-year-olds. But the mom who brings her six-year-old? “You two should do this together” lands perfectly — she’s not remotely bothered to be training alongside her own child. Keep your little ninjas program for the three-to-five-year-olds if you like, and let mom and dad take class with them there too.

Decision #2: No spectators at the intro — only participants

Every introductory lesson, everyone participates. (Grandma in the wheelchair is the exception; you know the difference.) The script starts on the phone: “When Joey comes down for class, we like to have both parents here — it’s very important for you to be involved. And we recommend you take class with him for the introductory classes. I’m not saying we expect you to enroll with him — he’ll feel more comfortable, and you’ll get a much better sense of what the program is about.” Then again at the door: “Take your shoes and socks off — you’re taking class with Billy today.”

The only real objections you’ll ever get are “dad just had knee surgery” and “mom’s in a skirt and stilettos” — which is exactly why you set it up on the phone: come dressed comfortably. The barrier for adults is never desire; it’s that first step onto the floor. It feels like an electric fence — they’re afraid of looking silly. Once they cross it, they’re a prospect.

Decision #3: Advertise to the child — enroll the family inside

Here’s where owners get this backwards: they hear “family program” and rewrite all their advertising around it. Don’t. Marketing has to enter the conversation already happening in the parent’s head — and that conversation is “I want an activity for Billy,” not “I want a family sport.” Nobody expects the dance school to be a mother-daughter activity. Advertise for the child; pull the parents in through the intro and enrollment process. Advertising “family martial arts” works worse, not better.

Decision #4: Family pricing — double tuition covers everybody

One price for one person. Two times that tuition for the entire family. Not “25% off the brother and half off the third” — percentage-discount stacking wrecks the numbers and complicates every conversation.

Stephen Oliver admits he resisted this one — he went through years of school data expecting the free third-and-fourth-family-member to bleed revenue. What the spreadsheet actually showed: you collect a bit more on two-in-a-family, a bit less on three-plus, and it nets out — because two-in-a-family is by far the most common case. Meanwhile the offer transforms the enrollment conversation: “It’s double the tuition and all three of you — all four of you — train.” Money stops being the objection for the whole family, and (as we’ll cover in a pricing post) it lets you push your headline tuition higher without pricing out the big families you want most.

Why fight for the parents at all?

Because families stay longer, refer more people, and support the child’s training at home. Look at your black belt graduations — it’s rare that there isn’t a parent on the floor with the kid. Now look at your dropouts: overwhelmingly the seven-year-old with nobody involved, whose mom is out shopping during class. When a parent hesitates with “we just wanted something for him to do,” the honest answer is: “I know — and if you have his best interests at heart, the students most likely to actually reach black belt are the ones whose families train together.”

There’s also a quieter reason: the enrollment dynamic. Whoever will be driving the child twice a week is the easy addition — they’re already at the school. And then you don’t have to sell the other spouse; your enrolled parent does it for you. “Bill, you’re bringing him twice a week anyway — you’ve been saying for months you want to do something. Do this with him.” That conversation happens in your office all the time — and you’re not the one making the pitch.

One curriculum — never watered down for kids

Family classes only work if there’s one curriculum. There is no point to a ten-year-old curriculum and a forty-year-old curriculum — and when schools split them, they almost always water it down for the kids, which is backwards. Get a kid hungry enough and no forty-year-old beginner can keep up with them. Chunk material smaller for the youngest students — a four-year-old might take four months on what others do in two — but teach the same material, so everyone mainstreams into the same classes.

Teach at an adult level and translate down — never explain “slow for the kids,” because then you lose everybody. (Zig Ziglar spoke at a seventh-grade level for forty years; today, effective communicators to broad audiences run closer to fifth.) In mixed drills, shift the emphasis: parents get the conditioning and application work, kids get the fun — kids run the obstacle course while parents hold pads or do the partner work. And yes, dodgeball night, where the parents get to peg their own kids, does wonders for family enrollment.

Converting the parents you already have

If your school is full of spectating parents today, run the jump-start: a table at the front door stacked with uniforms, every adult handed one — “we’re doing a special parent class today, go get changed.” Schools running this get 80–90% of parents on the floor. Someone will be grumpy about it; don’t argue — the ones who participate are your pipeline.

Then make the offer with a deadline: “We’re moving to family tuition. Since you only have one child enrolled, parents can join at [the incentive] — through September 30.” The expiration date and the public recognition are what make it move. Start with the beginners’ parents — they get to grow through the ranks with their child; parents of advanced students are always the hardest sell. And the language that resonates: “You’ll have a built-in instructor at home — Joey will be teaching you.” If schedules genuinely conflict, back-to-back beginner and intermediate classes let a parent and child train on the same trip — not as strong as the same class, but it works.

Last mechanic: never let the parent conversation stall the child’s enrollment. If they say “we want to get him started and think about ourselves,” flip instantly: “Perfect — let’s get Billy enrolled, and you take the next month of classes free.” Low friction — and if they show up and take one class, they almost always enroll.

Want help converting your school to the family-class model? Call or text National Director Bob Dunne at 1-720-256-0208 for a free school growth evaluation.
