{"id":5719,"date":"2026-08-03T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/martialartswealth.com\/go\/?p=5719"},"modified":"2026-08-03T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T08:00:00","slug":"selling-from-the-floor-spotlighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martialartswealth.com\/go\/selling-from-the-floor-spotlighting\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling From the Floor: Spotlighting, Discipline Sheets, and the Class That Renews Itself"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A phrase worth tattooing on your renewal system: <strong>we sell from the floor, not the office.<\/strong> By the time a family sits down to hear numbers, everything that decides the outcome has already happened in class \u2014 in what the instructor spotlighted, what the child brought home, and what the parents watched from the chairs. Here&#8217;s what that looks like, hour by hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spotlighting: the drill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re teaching a basic class \u2014 any drill, any style. Tommy does the technique with real effort. Stop everything: &#8220;Everybody freeze. Watch Tommy do that again.&#8221; He does it. &#8220;<em>That<\/em> is a black belt effort. The people who can train like Tommy are going to be my future leaders in here \u2014 and remember, leaders in here become leaders everywhere: at school, in sports, on every team you&#8217;re ever part of. Everybody give Tommy a big hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then bring him to the front. Run the drill again: &#8220;Who can keep up with Tommy? Where are my other future black belts?&#8221; Mary nails it \u2014 applause, bring her up too. Now a third. You&#8217;re still teaching the curriculum \u2014 no time is lost \u2014 but the class is now a machine that manufactures aspiration, and every kid on that floor is working to get called up. Don&#8217;t forget the ones already up there: walk the line with a pat on the back \u2014 &#8220;that&#8217;s it, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m talking about.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mirror-image rule: <strong>correct privately, praise publicly.<\/strong> The kid doing it wrong never gets spotlighted \u2014 he gets a quiet one-on-one: &#8220;Come on, you can do better \u2014 I want you to be one of my black belts.&#8221; Nobody goes home embarrassed; everybody goes home knowing exactly what gets celebrated. And if a student watches Tommy get praised and slumps instead of firing up \u2014 that&#8217;s not a spotlighting failure, that&#8217;s information: that child needs some juice, some quick wins and pats on the back, before they&#8217;re anywhere near a leadership recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the parents must be in the room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the dynamic every owner underestimates: <strong>a seven-year-old does not go home and transmit your message.<\/strong> No matter how excited the kids are in class, they almost never walk in the door and brief their parents on the future-black-belts speech. If the message wasn&#8217;t witnessed, it didn&#8217;t happen. So in the basic classes especially, parents watch \u2014 it&#8217;s an expectation, not an option. &#8220;I have to pick up my other kid&#8221; \u2014 no problem, come right back. What you never say is &#8220;oh, you don&#8217;t have to be here.&#8221; The parent who drops off and disappears never sees Tommy get spotlighted, never hears the black belt language, and renewal day arrives cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And close the loopholes. Nanny drop-offs, bodyguard drop-offs (yes, that happens), day classes that structurally guarantee working parents can&#8217;t attend \u2014 all of it builds a culture where parents aren&#8217;t involved, and then owners swear &#8220;parents in our city work&#8221; as if that were unique. Parents work in New York, Denver, LA, and Houston. Schedule kids&#8217; classes around school dismissal and the after-work window \u2014 4:30 and 6:15-style pairings \u2014 and require the parents for the milestones. You have permission to say it&#8217;s required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The two types of discipline (and the sheets that build them)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The character worksheets \u2014 attitude sheets, job lists, self-discipline sheets \u2014 exist for reasons owners forget. The job list was born because kids didn&#8217;t know what to do around the house; the self-discipline sheet because kids wouldn&#8217;t do what parents asked. The teaching frame is simple enough for a five-year-old: <em>there are two types of discipline. Parental discipline is doing what mom and dad ask, right away, without a fuss. Self-discipline is doing what needs doing without being asked at all. A black belt has both<\/em> \u2014 because before you can accept anyone else&#8217;s discipline, you first have to be able to discipline yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design notes that matter: the job list needs only two or three items checked per day, not every line \u2014 and leave blank rows for parents to write in their own household&#8217;s jobs. The sheets go home, the parents check them off nightly, the sheets come back for stripes \u2014 which means <em>something crosses the kitchen table between you and the parents every single week.<\/em> That&#8217;s the real function: constant, structured parental engagement. The child&#8217;s development would happen from good classes alone; the renewal requires the parents watching it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Layer on words of respect. When a parent says &#8220;sir and ma&#8217;am is too formal for our house,&#8221; don&#8217;t fight it: &#8220;No problem \u2014 we just want words of respect. Yes mom, yes dad \u2014 not &#8216;huh,&#8217; not &#8216;leave me alone.'&#8221; Then let the results sell: the family friends who meet your students and can&#8217;t believe the manners, the kid who&#8217;s still saying &#8220;yes sir&#8221; at 32. One coach&#8217;s line to skeptical parents of a C-student: &#8220;By the time he earns his black belt, he&#8217;ll be an A\/B student \u2014 it&#8217;s a requirement.&#8221; The response, almost every time: <em>&#8220;If you can do that, it&#8217;s worth every penny.&#8221;<\/em> Students from these systems have gone on to service academies and scholarship offers \u2014 one finished first in his class at Annapolis \u2014 and their parents rave about the school forever. That&#8217;s what you&#8217;re actually selling on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The follower-first frame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tie it together with the frame students hear from visit one: &#8220;I&#8217;m looking for my future leaders in this class \u2014 and to be a good leader, you first have to be a good follower.&#8221; The first year is about becoming a great follower: engaged, striped up, best effort, goal set. Tie your school into its lineage the way West Point does \u2014 cadets buy into a system that produced MacArthur and Patton; your students buy into the line of black belts your school and your style have produced. When you ask &#8220;who has set their goal for black belt?&#8221; every hand should go up \u2014 and when Tommy&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t, that&#8217;s your cue: &#8220;Don&#8217;t you want to be a black belt?
