That&#8217;s not trivia; that&#8217;s the machinery of reverence. The cadets buy into a system that produced MacArthur and Patton, and the buying-in is what carries them through the hard parts. Your school needs the same machinery. West Point has the long gray line; Annapolis, the long blue line. <strong>Your school has a long black line \u2014 if you build it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put the line on the wall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of our members came back from a previous West Point trip and copied the simplest move: the tour guide kept saying &#8220;this was one of our graduates\u2026 this was one of our graduates.&#8221; So she put her black belt pictures on the wall and now every studio tour includes: &#8220;This one got into Annapolis. This one was valedictorian.&#8221; One member school&#8217;s black belt is now the county sheriff \u2014 he started there at fifteen, and he comes back to speak at black belt tests. Another student set his goal at seven years old after watching a graduate speak at a graduation about being accepted to Annapolis; eleven years later he graduated first in his class there and won a scholarship to Oxford. Those stories don&#8217;t just impress \u2014 they <em>recruit the next kid into the line<\/em>. And if your school is younger and thinner on stories: you have more than you think. Most of us just don&#8217;t pay attention, and don&#8217;t write them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feed the wall systematically: every black belt candidate writes a 300-word essay \u2014 &#8220;what this school has done for me&#8221; \u2014 and every instructor candidate adds a second: &#8220;what teaching has done for me.&#8221; Every black belt test includes a community service project, with awards for the best (one 12-year-old bound his into a full-color textbook). Awards make next cycle&#8217;s entries better; the stack of essays and projects becomes the archive of your line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give everything a story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a story chain worth studying. Teddy Roosevelt was New York&#8217;s police commissioner; the NYPD&#8217;s Medal of Valor design later became the Yankees logo; a modern commissioner had replica medals struck to present to dignitaries \u2014 and receiving one, knowing the chain, means something a trinket never could. Jhoon Rhee designed a human-flag formation \u2014 229 students, one for each million Americans at the time, red-white-and-blue uniforms forming the flag \u2014 that marched down Pennsylvania Avenue past the reviewing stand, after weekends of rehearsal in a pro football stadium where volunteers walked alongside to catch anyone who fainted in the heat. If you trained in that lineage, that story is <em>yours<\/em> \u2014 and your students should inherit it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most owners are so close to their own history they can&#8217;t see the treasure. (When a legendary instructor&#8217;s old office was cleared out recently, what the family saw as trash, two of our coaches recognized as artifacts \u2014 and scrambled to save them. Meanwhile Bruce Lee&#8217;s Porsche sold at auction for over a million dollars, because provenance is value.) The fix: catalog your mementos, name your rituals, write the behind-the-scenes stories down, and teach them \u2014 the way West Point does, deliberately. At black belt retreats, our schools run five-page trivia quizzes on organizational history. (Sample question that stumps everyone: which coach was president of his high school chess club? Wrong \u2014 it was the world champion fighter. The nerd ran the computer-math club.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Disney rule: traditions before the broom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disney hires a 17-year-old to sweep a parking lot for a summer \u2014 and before he touches a broom, he gets days of <em>Traditions<\/em>: Steamboat Willie, Walt&#8217;s story, who Tinker Bell is, the history behind the magic. Why educate a four-month employee for 20 hours? Because it converts a parking-lot sweeper into an ambassador. Do the same: build your school&#8217;s history into the curriculum from white belt on, push it past your senior staff down to the newest volunteer, and by black belt every student should carry a hundred small facts about the style, the lineage, and the school \u2014 and treasure them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nobody enrolls for your resume \u2014 but the line keeps them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crucial marketing distinction: the general public doesn&#8217;t know what your titles mean and doesn&#8217;t care \u2014 leading your advertising with your resume is a classic mistake. But once a family enrolls, <strong>educating them into reverence is retention gold.<\/strong> The resume that couldn&#8217;t sell an intro becomes the lineage that keeps a family six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And borrow credibility shamelessly \u2014 honestly, but shamelessly. Stephen Oliver got his after-school programs into one of the largest public school systems in the country at 25 years old \u2014 not on personal reputation, but on affiliations: curriculum work with Chuck Norris&#8217;s Kick Start program, demonstrations alongside national anti-drug initiatives, a business plan stuffed with recommendation letters. You don&#8217;t need a personal relationship with a celebrity to say, truthfully, &#8220;our program is inspired by the approach used in [known program]&#8221; or &#8220;we&#8217;re part of the organization that did X.&#8221; Celebrity and association open doors that credentials alone never will \u2014 with school districts, with media, and with the parent who&#8217;s deciding whether your school is a big deal. Inside the walls, the lineage builds reverence; outside them, the associations build credibility.
