And whatever ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude says about you \u2014 good, bad, or hedged \u2014 largely decides whether you get the call at all. This is going to be one of the most important subjects in martial arts marketing over the next few months, and most of you have never once checked what these machines are saying about you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Behavior Didn\u2019t Change \u2014 It Got Stronger<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing new is happening here in principle. Essentially no parent enrolls a child in an ongoing program \u2014 something they\u2019ll pay for month after month \u2014 without checking you out first, the easiest way possible. We\u2019ve said for years that about 80% of your prospects will Google you before they ever commit. That hasn\u2019t changed. What\u2019s changed is what they see when they do.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now when a parent Googles your school, Gemini\u2019s AI answer sits right at the very top of the results \u2014 above your website, above your reviews, above everything. So they\u2019re getting an AI evaluation of you whether they meant to or not. And a rapidly growing number skip Google entirely and go straight to ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude and just ask. Either way, an algorithm is now standing between you and the parent, giving them its opinion of you before you get to say a word.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Run This Audit on Yourself Today<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s exactly what to do, and do it before you finish your coffee. Go to a computer that is <em>not<\/em> logged into any account. This part matters, and I\u2019ll explain why in a second. Then ask, in plain, natural language, the same things a real parent would ask:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cWhat do you think of [Your School]?\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cWould it be a good fit for my seven-year-old?\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cWho\u2019s the best martial arts school in [your area] for my kid?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See what it says about you. Then \u2014 and this part will sting a little \u2014 see what it says about your competitors. You need to know whether the machine is sending that third question\u2019s answer to you or to the school across town.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why \u201cLogged Out\u201d Is Non-Negotiable<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s why I\u2019m so insistent about the logged-out part. If you\u2019re signed into your own account, the model knows you. It knows your background, it knows you own the school, and it\u2019s built to be agreeable \u2014 so it flatters you and tells you what you want to hear. You\u2019ll come away thinking you\u2019re golden.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s worthless. You don\u2019t need the answer the machine gives its friend. You need the stranger\u2019s-eye answer \u2014 the cold, unvarnished thing a real prospect actually gets when they\u2019ve never heard of you. Log out, become a stranger, and read what the parent reads.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Actually Feeds the Recommendation<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So where does the machine get its opinion of you? From everything. Local TV, newspapers, and magazines now often get more traffic online than they ever did in print, and all that coverage shows up as authority the AI trusts. The chatbots also pull heavily from places like Reddit \u2014 which means one negative Reddit thread about your school becomes a real, concrete problem. Negative publicity gets pulled in. So does positive. The machine doesn\u2019t forget and it doesn\u2019t take your side.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The worst outcome I\u2019ve personally seen? An AI flat-out telling someone that a particular school was essentially \u201cblacklisted \u2014 never go there,\u201d because of background allegations it had surfaced. Imagine that. A parent asks one innocent question and the machine tells them to run. And here\u2019s the part owners underestimate: a hedged, \u201cmixed\u201d recommendation is almost as damaging as an outright bad one. \u201cIt\u2019s fine, but\u2026\u201d loses the sale just as dead as \u201cavoid it.\u201d Parents choosing where to put their kid don\u2019t gamble on \u201cbut.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Job Is Two-Fold<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the work in front of you breaks into two clear pieces.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Know exactly what the AI engines say about you today.<\/strong> Not what you hope they say \u2014 what they actually say, logged out, right now.<\/li><li><strong>Go to work making that recommendation an unqualified A-plus.<\/strong> \u201cYes, this would be wonderful\u201d \u2014 not a qualified maybe, not a negative.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means building authority on the AI systems the same way you\u2019d build it anywhere else: press, reviews, coverage, a clean reputation. It means designing your website to build authority <em>for<\/em> the AI \u2014 not just to generate clicks and opt-ins, but to feed the machine the evidence it needs to recommend you without hesitation. And where negatives come up, you address them head-on instead of pretending they\u2019re invisible. They\u2019re not invisible. The AI already found them.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Amplifies the Fundamentals \u2014 It Doesn\u2019t Replace Them<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t misread me. None of this replaces birthday parties or live events. It <em>amplifies<\/em> them. When one of your members runs a birthday party and brings 15 kids, or when you meet a dozen families at a live event, 80 to 90% of those moms are going to background-check your school before they ever enroll \u2014 and increasingly they\u2019re doing it through an AI.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So all that great grassroots work you\u2019re doing hands the prospect right back to the machine for a verdict. Your job is to make sure that what they find <em>closes<\/em> the sale instead of killing it. Do the birthday parties. Work the events.
