They catch up on work, scroll their phone, whatever it is — but they’re not walking in, they’re not watching class, and they’re not seeing a single thing you’re teaching. Which means when it’s time to renew, or time to reinforce a character lesson at home, you’re trying to sell value to someone who has never actually witnessed it.

My answer to that owner was blunt, and I want to walk you through the whole thing, because it’s one of the highest-leverage fixes available to almost any school in our group.

There Is No Drop Billy Off at the Curb

Here is the hard rule I run in my own schools: there is no dropping the kid off at the curb. You go grocery shop, come back, pick him up later — that does not happen. We require one parent, at minimum, to be present for every class. Preferably on the floor, training alongside their child. If not on the floor, then at minimum in the room, hearing the announcements, watching the class, seeing what’s actually being taught so they know what to reinforce at home.

There’s a liability piece to this that people underrate. If I have twenty kids in class and twenty parents in the room, I never have a child alone without a parent present. I never get the accusation that another kid did something inappropriate in the back room, or that something happened while nobody was watching. Cameras everywhere and separated changing areas help, obviously — but having an engaged adult physically present eliminates an entire category of risk before it can start.

But the liability benefit isn’t even the main event. The main event is this: a parent who is engaged in the process — ideally on the floor — dramatically reduces your dropout rate, and it dramatically improves your renewal rate. Both at once, from the same fix.

Don’t Try to Fix the Families You Already Have

Here’s where a lot of owners go wrong when they hear this, and it’s worth naming directly: they hear “get parents engaged” and immediately start trying to retrain families who have been dropping off their kid for five months and are fully settled into that habit. Don’t. Trying to change behavior that’s already calcified feels punitive to the family, and it rarely works.

Forget your existing student body for a second. Change how you orient the next enrollment that walks in the door. That’s the entire reframe. You’re not fixing what’s already broken — you’re building the new habit correctly from day one, for every new family going forward.

Practically, that means: every parent takes the first lesson with their child. Every parent takes the second lesson with their child. Every parent, or at minimum one of the two, is present at enrollment. If a family wants to enroll, hand a uniform to the parent and say, “Why don’t you train with him to Gold Belt? If the budget’s the issue, that’s fine — we’ll figure that out — but let’s get the first couple of months training together so everybody’s more comfortable.” Then in the enrollment conversation itself, you set the expectation plainly: all the kids come twice a week now, and we don’t want it to be drop-them-off-and-go-shopping. We require a parent here for the lesson. Ideally in class. At minimum, in the room, hearing what’s going on.

Family Classes, Not Kids Classes

Here’s a structural point that changes everything: at the beginner level, I want every class to be a family class, not a kids class with parents watching from chairs. Keep your intermediate and advanced adult classes for adults who show up on their own — a 30-year-old attorney training solo doesn’t belong dropped into a room full of seven-year-olds. But at the entry point, mom and dad training next to their seven-year-old works beautifully.

Getting that started takes a little truth-telling in advance. If I’ve only got one mom on the floor with a room full of kids, that doesn’t look inviting to the next parent who walks in. So early on, I run the beginner classes hard, get a real critical mass of parents into uniforms and onto the mat, and then I can honestly tell the next prospective parent: “At least half, sometimes more, of the kids who enroll here have one or both parents training right alongside them.” Now that new parent looks out at the floor, sees a bunch of adults already out there, and doesn’t feel like the odd one out.

The Real Barrier Is Time, Not Money

Most schools try to solve parent participation with a promotion — Mother’s Day, moms train free for a month, or Father’s Day, dads train free. It almost never works, and the reason is instructive: the real gap is time, not money.

Think about what you’re actually asking a family to do if everyone has separate class times. Billy is six, he trains Tuesday and Thursday at four. Susie is twelve, she trains Monday and Wednesday at five-thirty. Mom, if she wants to train too, comes Tuesday and Thursday at seven. That’s not one trip — that’s a dozen separate drives home and back every week, and you’ve just told this family they need to burn all of that extra time to participate together. Nobody signs up for that, no matter how free the class is.

Compare that to telling the same family: everybody is in class Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30. It’s a family class. You’ve eliminated the extra trips entirely. This is true no matter what the format is — cardio kickboxing, cage-style fitness classes, whatever version of the concept is trending this year. What never works is separate programming for moms, separate programming for dads, at separate times, requiring separate trips. Consolidate the time and the participation problem mostly solves itself.

“It’s Parent Month” — The Assumptive Close That Works

Here’s a tactic that gets real results without a heavy sales pitch: declare a family month. Every mom and every dad is invited to take class alongside their kid. Set up a table at the front, and every parent who shows up with a child — whether they were planning to drop off or not — gets handed a uniform and told, “Get out in class.”

Some will ask, “Do I have to?” The answer is simple and assumptive: “It’s parent month — all the parents are training with the kids this month.” That kind of confident, assumptive framing gets roughly 75% compliance. And it breaks the single biggest barrier standing between a parent and the floor, which isn’t logistics — it’s that they’re quietly afraid to step onto the mat in the first place. Once you get them out there once, getting them enrolled afterward is a much easier conversation.

Re-Engaging the Parents Who Are Already Checked Out

For families who haven’t renewed yet and are already in the disengaged pattern, don’t try to force a sudden culture change. Go back to a structured every-two-week progress update instead. Reach out and say plainly: “We’re going through progress updates with all of our beginner students, and we need both parents there — let’s find a time in the next couple of weeks that works for your schedule.” If they’re not ready to renew, schedule the next check-in two weeks after that, and build an action plan each time.

The root problem with a disengaged parent is almost never that they dislike the school. It’s that they have very little appreciation for the quality of the instruction or the value of what’s being taught, because they’ve never actually seen it — and they have almost no engagement with whatever homework or character-development assignments are coming home. Use the progress update to name that directly and specifically: “One of the things I’ve noticed, Ms. Smith, is that Joey hasn’t been doing the job list or the healthy-eating sheet — we’d like to see more of that, because it’s having a real positive impact at home, and it helps us know how to reward him properly.” That reopens the door. It’s effectively running the same folder conference you should have run at enrollment, just later and more deliberately.

And by the time your best students reach the advanced levels — Black Belt prep, for us, or Purple Belt territory for the BJJ programs — parent involvement stops being a nice-to-have and becomes a hard requirement. If we don’t have engaged parents at that stage, the student simply doesn’t move through the process. That’s not harsh; it’s consistent. The families who showed up from day one are the ones who make it all the way.

Key Takeaways

No drop-off at the curb. Require at least one parent present for every beginner class — on the floor if possible, in the room at minimum.

Fix the next enrollment, not the last five months. Changing an already-settled family’s habits feels punitive. Build the right habit into every new enrollment instead.

Make beginner classes family classes, not kids classes with a waiting room. Keep adult-only programming for adults who train solo.

The real barrier is time, not money. Consolidate family class times instead of running separate promotions for moms and dads.

An assumptive “family month” gets about 75% compliance — far better than an optional invitation ever will.

Use scheduled progress updates to re-engage parents who are already checked out, and make parent involvement mandatory by the time students reach advanced belt prep.

Related Reading

Back-to-School Orientation Nights: The Most Productive Day for Martial Arts Schools

How to Retain Black Belt Students: The Advanced-Retention System That Stops the Drop-Off

The Martial Arts Renewal Process, Step by Step: From Day-One Folder to Signed Upgrade

Free Resources to Grow Your School

Ready to add your next 100 students?
