Parents don’t buy karate because a seven-year-old likes it; they buy outcomes: confidence, discipline, safety. Anchor the conversation on the outcome the parent already told you they want, pre-frame the inevitable “I don’t feel like going” day, and you’ll convert far more intros.

Watch the original video above — it’s pulled from one of our coaching calls, where I walked several school owners through this exact conversation, word for word.

The Objection That Quietly Kills More Enrollments Than Price

On a recent coaching call, one of our member school owners asked me a question I’ve heard a thousand times since I opened my first school in 1975: “What do I do when the parents defer to the child? They say, ‘I want Johnny to do this as long as Johnny wants to do this.’ It’s like the child is in control of everything.”

Minutes later, another member told me about an intro she’d just run: a timid twelve-year-old, homeschooled, on a tablet all day, sheltered from everything by well-meaning parents. The parents said they wanted confidence for their daughter. The girl whispered her way through the first lesson, said she didn’t want to come back, and the next day the parents texted: “We decided not to try the second lesson after all. She just doesn’t want to do it.”

That family walked away from exactly the thing their daughter needed most, and the school lost an enrollment it had already paid to generate. Most school owners shrug and say, “Well, you can’t force the kid.” Wrong. That enrollment didn’t die in the lobby that day. It died earlier — in a conversation that never happened.

Here’s my position, and I’m harder on this than most people in the industry: I don’t care whether the kid likes karate. I am genuinely uninterested in whether the child likes the classes. You will never hear one of my instructors say, “We’ll do a class and see if he likes it.” What I care about — the only thing I care about at the intro — is whether the parents see the value this training will create for their child.

Now, obviously, I never say that out loud to a parent. And to be clear about what happens on the floor: our intro lessons are engineered so the child has a great experience. At the end of an intro, when we ask, “Are you ready to become a Black Belt?” the child says “Yes, sir!” one hundred percent of the time — not 99 percent, one hundred — because the entire intro was built to produce that answer. But the child’s enthusiasm is the byproduct of the system, not the basis of the sale. The basis of the sale is the parent’s conviction about outcomes.

The Parent Is the Buyer. Act Like It.

Think about first grade. A parent might ask their child how they liked the first day of school. But no parent on Earth says, “Well, if you didn’t like it, we won’t do first grade.” That would be absurd. Education isn’t optional based on a six-year-old’s mood, because the parent understands the stakes.

Yet parents today will absolutely shop activities that way — try a school, see if the kid “likes it,” try another one. Here’s the reframe I teach: smart parents don’t pick the school their kid likes best; they pick the school that will produce the best outcomes for their kid. Your job in the enrollment conference is to move the parent from the first category into the second — gently, respectfully, and completely.

When you let the child be the decision-maker, you’ve handed a five-figure enrollment decision to someone who also believes ice cream is a food group. The parent came to you because something was broken: the kid doesn’t listen at home, hides schoolwork, gets pushed around, can’t look an adult in the eye. The parent is the one feeling that pain. The parent is the one writing the check. The parent is the buyer. Every word of your intro conference should be built on that reality.

The PIVOT Script: Turning “Does He Like It?” Into “This Is What He Needs”

Over five decades of running schools — and coaching hundreds of owners to $1M+ operations through Martial Arts Wealth Mastery — I’ve refined this into a repeatable structure I call the PIVOT Script. It pivots the enrollment conversation off the child’s momentary feelings and onto the parent’s permanent priorities. Five moves: Prioritize, Individualize, Visualize, Own the frame, Time-proof. Train your staff on all five and run them in order on every single intro.

P — Prioritize the Four Real Reasons

Before the first lesson ever starts, every family fills out a student information sheet. Mine sits next to my desk because we train staff on it constantly. It asks what they want to get out of martial arts — and it offers exactly four choices: self-confidence, self-discipline, self-defense, physical fitness. They must rank them one through four.

Don’t put 55 options on the sheet. Decades of watching real families walk through real doors taught us those four are why people actually come — and they arrive in a predictable order. Self-confidence is number one by a mile. Self-discipline is number two. Safety and fitness trail far behind. The ranking matters because it hands you, before the lesson even begins, the exact emotional territory this enrollment will be decided on. Whatever they ranked first is the anchor for everything that follows.

I — Individualize the Outcome

Here’s where most school owners fail — including experienced ones. The parent says “confidence,” the owner nods, checks the box, and moves on. That word is doing no work yet. “Confidence” is a category, not a commitment. You have to make it specific to this child.

On that coaching call, I role-played it with the owner whose timid twelve-year-old walked away. I asked: “What did the parents say confidence meant to them?” She didn’t know — she’d never asked. So we ran the conversation the way it should have gone:

“When you say you want self-confidence for her — what does that mean for her, specifically?”

“She answers every question like it’s a question. Everything trails up at the end, like she’s not sure of anything she says.”

“Okay. Where else does she need confidence?”

“Her posture. Her voice. She won’t speak up.”

“How does that affect her with other kids?”

“She doesn’t really play with other kids. Honestly, we keep her away from them — we’re worried about bullying.”

“Is it possible that speaking and carrying herself that way actually invites other kids to pick on her?”

“…Yes.”

That exchange takes two or three minutes. By the end of it, the parents aren’t evaluating a karate class anymore. They’re looking at a precise picture of the transformation they want: a daughter confident enough to speak with conviction, hold her ground, and interact with other kids without being a target. Now — and only now — do you have something the child’s mood on a Tuesday can’t compete with.

V — Visualize the Cost of Doing Nothing

People move away from pain faster than they move toward benefit — I learned that from decades of direct-response marketing, and it’s just as true face-to-face in your office. Once the outcome is specific, ask the question almost nobody asks: “And if nothing changes — if she doesn’t get training like this — what happens?”

Let the parent answer. Don’t rescue them from the silence. They’ll say it themselves: she stays timid, the bullying risk grows, the shell gets thicker every year, and it gets harder to fix at fourteen than at twelve. When the parent articulates the cost of inaction in their own words, you never have to “close hard” — the parent has already sold themselves. Your enrollment conference stops being a pitch and becomes a shared plan.

O — Own the Decision Frame

Now the objection itself. The parent says: “That all sounds great, but I want to see if he wants to do it.” Here’s the exact language pattern I use:

“What matters most is what you want him to get out of this. You told me the most important thing was self-discipline — because right now things are a mess at home, he doesn’t listen, he isn’t bringing his schoolwork home, and sometimes he’s not honest about it. Those were the things you said were really important to change. Is that still what’s important to you?”

Notice what that does. It doesn’t argue with the parent. It replays the parent’s own words — from the information sheet and the Individualize step — back to them. And as for “does he want to do it”: right now, he does. We just asked him at the end of the intro, “Do you want to be a Black Belt?” and he said yes — because the intro was designed so he would. So the honest answer to the parent is: “Right now he wants to do it. He just told us.” The frame you’re establishing, without ever saying it bluntly, is the first-grade frame: we don’t put children in charge of decisions about their own development. Loving parents decide, then help the child succeed inside that decision.

T — Time-Proof the Enrollment

This is the step that separates a good intro conference from a great one — and it’s the step that protects your retention for the next twelve months. Before the parent ever signs, you inoculate them against the quit conversation you know is coming:

“Here’s what’s going to happen. One day — maybe in week three, maybe in month four — he’s going to feel like watching TV or eating ice cream instead. He won’t feel like coming to class. That’s completely normal for kids; one day they’re excited about something, the next day they’re not. That day is exactly when you need to remember what we’re here to accomplish — the discipline, the follow-through. Our job is to help him through those moments so you get the result you came here for. Fair enough?”

Now, when the whiny Wednesday arrives — and it will — the parent doesn’t hear a crisis. They hear the thing you predicted, on schedule, and they respond the way you rehearsed together. This is also precisely why top schools enroll on a 12-month Trial Enrollment rather than loose month-to-month: framed properly, it’s the school’s structured evaluation of the student’s readiness for the full Black Belt program, and it gives the parent a defined commitment horizon that matches how long real character change actually takes. Month-to-month billing is an engraved invitation for the child’s worst mood to cancel the parent’s best intentions.

When the Child Melts Down: Two Levers, Not One

Back to that twelve-year-old. When we dug into the details on the call, a critical fact surfaced: during the first intro, the girl had literally said, “I don’t want to go to the second class.” The school had scheduled her into a group lesson anyway. That’s a process error, and it changes the play call entirely.

If a child is freaking out about coming back — genuinely fearful, not just lukewarm — you do not throw them into a group class. You schedule another private lesson. Maybe two or three. A fearful, low-confidence child needs individual wins before a group environment, and the parents need to see you adjusting the plan to their child rather than forcing their child into your schedule. You always have two levers:

Lever one — the parent’s conviction: the PIVOT conversation above, anchored on outcomes and the cost of inaction.

Lever two — the delivery plan: private lessons, pacing, and progression matched to where this particular child actually is.

In my schools, instructors carry a metal card with our charter on it: we’re a highly disciplined martial arts school, and we measure results not by who we exclude, but by every student’s constant growth. That means wherever a child is when they walk in — quiet, timid, uncoordinated — is simply where they are. We never bark at a shy kid to yell louder in an intro. The intro isn’t a tryout for the child; it’s a demonstration for the parent that we know how to move their child from where she is to where they want her to be.

And note: this isn’t just a kids’ issue. The adult version walks in every week: “I’m not sure I can handle it. I’m out of shape. This is intimidating.” Same script, same pivot — back to their stated goals, back to what happens if they change nothing, forward to a plan matched to their starting point.

What This Objection Costs You in Real Dollars

Let’s put numbers on it, because this is where the casual “oh well, the kid didn’t want to” attitude gets expensive. In a well-coached premium school, new-student tuition runs $347–$397 per month — call it $375 in round numbers — against an industry commodity average of $140–$185. On a 12-month Trial Enrollment, one fumbled “my child doesn’t want to do it” conversation walks roughly $4,500 of first-year revenue out your door. Keep that family through a Black Belt journey at sub-2% monthly attrition — the target we coach to, against an industry norm of 3–5% — and the true lifetime value is several times that.

Meanwhile, you already paid to create that intro. Between ad spend and staff time, a new enrollment typically costs $150–$300 to acquire — five to seven times what it costs to keep an existing family happy. On the same coaching call, another member was paying about $27 per Facebook lead in a five-mile radius. Do the math on his funnel: if it takes ten leads to produce a handful of booked appointments, a few shows, and one or two enrollments, then every intro that reaches your floor represents hundreds of dollars of sunk acquisition cost. Losing that family at the final conversation — after the ads worked, the follow-up worked, and the intro worked — because nobody asked the parent what “confidence” actually meant? That’s not bad luck. That’s an untrained conversation.

This is also why I push members to track the full chain by lead source: spend, leads, appointments set, appointments shown, enrollments. When an owner tells me “I got a bunch of leads but nobody enrolled,” the problem is almost never the leads alone — it’s usually further down the chain, and very often it’s sitting right here, in the intro conference, where the child was allowed to out-vote the parent.

Premium Tuition Demands a Premium Conversation

Here’s the connection most owners miss: you cannot charge $375 a month on the strength of “let’s see if he likes it.” Nobody pays premium tuition for an activity a child might abandon in three weeks. Parents pay premium tuition for a result delivered by professionals who clearly know the road — including the predictable rough patches — better than the parents do.

The PIVOT Script is what that professionalism sounds like. When you calmly tell a parent, “One day he won’t feel like coming, that’s normal, and here’s how we’ll handle it together,” you sound like a pediatrician laying out a treatment plan — not a hobby vendor hoping the kid stays entertained. That authority is precisely what justifies premium positioning, and it compounds: the same outcome-anchored conversation that closes the enrollment is the one that saves it in month four when the first quit impulse hits. Enrollment conversations and retention aren’t separate skills. They’re the same conversation, held at two different times.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly should I say when a parent says “I want to see if my child wants to do it”?

Redirect to their stated outcome: “What matters most is what you want him to get from this. You said self-discipline was the priority because of what’s happening at home and school — is that still what’s important to you?” Then add: “Right now he does want to do it — we just asked him. And one day he won’t feel like coming; that’s normal for every child, and that’s exactly when this training does its job.” You’re not arguing with the parent — you’re replaying their own reasons back to them.

Isn’t it wrong to enroll a child who says they don’t want to do it?

No more than first grade is wrong. Children routinely resist the very things that build them — school, vegetables, bedtime, practice. The parent’s job is to choose what serves the child; your job is to make the experience so well-designed that the child succeeds inside that choice. There is one caveat: if a child is genuinely fearful rather than merely lukewarm, slow the plan down — additional private lessons before any group class — instead of forcing the pace.

Does this approach work for adult prospects too?

Yes — adults simply run the objection on themselves: “I’m not sure I can handle it, I’m out of shape, it’s intimidating.” Use the identical structure: return to their ranked goals, get specific about what those goals mean in their daily life, ask what happens if nothing changes, and pre-frame the motivational dip that always comes a few weeks in. The buyer and the student are the same person, but the psychology is unchanged.

Your Next Step

If your intro-to-enrollment conversion is anywhere below 80%, the leak is almost certainly in this conversation — and it’s fixable in a week of focused staff training.
