They watch their competitors go quiet, they let their own marketing go quiet, and then they act surprised when July and August are slow. Here’s the truth I’ve been teaching since I was running multiple Mile High Karate locations doing over a million dollars a year: summer is the most target-rich marketing environment on the calendar.

Think about where your prospects are. During the school year, your primary kids market is locked inside elementary schools six hours a day. In the summer, those same families are out in public — at the pools, the parks, the rec centers, the farmers markets, the movies-in-the-park nights, the summer camps, the July 4th festivals. Mom, dad, two kids, and the golden retriever are literally walking past you every weekend. Every one of those gatherings is a place where you can set up a table, run a live event system, and capture leads by the dozens.

The problem is never opportunity. The problem is that most owners have no media plan. They don’t decide which channels they’re going to work, what each one costs, what the message is, or what weeks each campaign runs. So they do one booth, get mediocre results because it was improvised, and conclude “summer is slow.” Summer isn’t slow. Their planning was.

My mission every summer was simple and specific: line up 1,000 leads across June, July, and August. Do that and two things happen. First, you have a really good July and August enrollment period — potentially your best months of the year. Second, you walk into back-to-school season with a thousand people who have raised their hands in some way, shape, or form — a database you can follow up by email, text, voicemail, voice AI, and direct mail. Back-to-school stops being a hope and becomes a harvest.

The Summer Media Mix Blueprint

To make that thousand-lead target real, I teach what I call the Summer Media Mix Blueprint: five lead channels, one campaign calendar, one target. You don’t pick your favorite channel — you run all five, because they hit different segments of your market at different points in the summer, and because each one feeds the others. Here’s the mix:

Channel 1 — School-Calendar Marketing: end-of-school-year promotions and back-to-school orientation days, booked months in advance.

Channel 2 — Community Live Events: holiday festivals, concerts and movies in the park, farmers markets.

Channel 3 — The Summer Camp Circuit: teaching classes at day camps, rec centers, and daycares, with same-day parent appointments.

Channel 4 — Movie Theater Promotions: booths at blockbuster opening weekends.

Channel 5 — The Follow-Up Database: the multi-media follow-up machine that converts all of the above into July, August, and September enrollments.

Notice what this mix costs. Outside of a few hundred dollars in booth fees and some printing, almost all of it is labor, relationships, and calendar discipline — not ad spend. When a well-run paid campaign costs you roughly $150 to $300 per enrollment in ad spend and staff time, a summer full of live-event leads is the cheapest high-quality media you will ever buy. Let’s work through each channel.

Channel 1: School-Calendar Marketing — Book It Before the Staff Disappears

This is the channel almost everyone blows, because the work has to happen in May and early June — before the schools empty out. There are three plays here.

Play one: end-of-year passes and awards. Before school lets out, arrange for VIP passes or achievement certificates to go home with every child — rewards for good grades, good attendance, good citizenship. I’ve had schools get these to 700 kids at a time, stapled to the final grade report or distributed digitally now that everything’s online. It’s a goodwill gesture for the school and a lead device for you.

Play two: lock in your fall school programs now. The end of the school year is when I always scheduled my fall “PE Teacher for a Day” visits and after-school enrichment programs. In most districts, the staff sticks around a week or two after the kids leave, and comes back a week or two before school resumes. That’s your window. If you wait until August, you’ll be scrambling to reach teachers who are on a beach somewhere.

Play three — the big one: back-to-school orientation days. Almost every elementary school runs some version of a new-student orientation or meet-the-teacher night the week before or the week school starts. Kids drag their parents through the building, and the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the soccer league, and the chess club all have tables set up signing families up. You can be one of those tables — but only if you got on the roster months earlier.

How productive is this? The last time I personally worked one of these events for one of my schools, we made 85 appointments in two hours. Clients of ours have made as many as 550 appointments in a single week by working multiple schools’ orientation days back to back. The catch in a dense suburban market is that many schools run their orientations on the same one or two evenings — in my old Jefferson County territory we were working with 20 different schools, which meant seven to ten events on the same night. That’s a volunteer-recruitment problem you solve in June, not a surprise you discover in August.

The booth operation itself is the same live-event system you’d run anywhere: attention device, short survey or prize entry, and an appointment book. How flashy you need to be depends on the school. I’ve worked orientations where every club was arranged in a tidy L-shape and families walked table to table — simple. And I’ve worked ones scattered across a cafeteria, a lobby, and a gymnasium where you needed the spin wheel and every attention-getter you own. Scout the venue and play it by ear.

Channel 2: Community Live Events — Go Where the Families Already Are

Summer hands you a parade of family gatherings. At the big end: Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day festivals — and for my Canadian members, Victoria Day and Canada Day. At the smaller end: farmers markets every weekend. In between: the concerts-in-the-park and movies-in-the-park series that nearly every town runs. Where I live in Colorado, there’s music at the lake in Evergreen and movies in the park every Friday night in Golden — and your town has its own version.

Your job in May is to build the complete inventory: every festival, market, concert series, and movie night within your drive time, with dates, booth costs, and application deadlines. Then book them. Each of these is a table, two staff members or volunteers, a prize wheel or drawing, and an appointment-setting script. Run them as a system, not as a one-off, and each event reliably produces a stack of appointments — because the audience is precisely your demographic, out in a relaxed mood, with the kids right there to get excited about martial arts.

Channel 3: The Summer Camp Circuit — PE Teacher for a Day, All Summer Long

During the school year, your access point to kids is the elementary school. During the summer, that access point multiplies. Kids are at the pool, the community center, the sports leagues, Scout camps, church Bible camps, tech and coding camps on the local college campus, sports camps — and above all, the day camps. The local daycare has 40 school-age kids parked there all summer. The rec center has 250. Every one of those programs is starving for fresh activities, and you’re a free field trip that walks in the door.

The system is the summer equivalent of PE Teacher for a Day. You arrange to teach a class at the camp. Because most camps are drop-off/pick-up operations, you have the kids fill out permission slips that morning, you teach during the day, and then — this is the money step — you have a staff member standing at the door from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. making appointments with the parents as they come to pick up their kids. The child is excited, the parent is right there, and the appointment gets booked on the spot. It is very, very productive.

There’s a second payoff most owners miss: the people who run summer camp programs very often also run the after-school care in the elementary schools, and some are elementary and middle school teachers themselves. Every camp you serve well in July builds a relationship that gets your foot in the door of the public and private schools in the fall. Channel 3 quietly feeds Channel 1 for next year. That’s how a media mix compounds.

Channel 4: Movie Theater Promotions — Rent the Blockbuster’s Crowd

Every summer, Hollywood spends hundreds of millions of dollars driving your exact market — families with kids — to one physical location on a predictable weekend. You can rent a table in the lobby. Usually it’s as simple as going through the theater’s media company (for the big chains, National CineMedia) and asking for a booth; expect to pay somewhere around $500 to $700 for the weekend.

The formula for making it work: a big multiplex — 20 or 24 screens — plus a genuine blockbuster opening that weekend. Check the summer release calendar in May, circle the two or three family titles projected to open north of $100 million, and book those weekends. An animated family blockbuster is your kids-market play; a superhero opening pulls across every demographic. The booth operation is identical to any other live event — attention device, entry form, appointments. You’re simply borrowing a nine-figure marketing budget to assemble your crowd.

Channel 5: The Follow-Up Database — Where the Thousand Leads Turn Into Money

Here’s what separates the owners who have a great summer from the owners who merely had some nice booths: what happens to the names. Every appointment made, every prize-wheel entry, every permission slip is a lead that goes into your database — and that database gets worked with every medium you own: email, text, voicemail drops, voice AI, and direct mail.

Some of those thousand leads enroll in July and August — that’s your immediate harvest, and it’s why I tell members to plan on July and August being as good as any month they have, if not their best. But the leads who don’t enroll in July don’t evaporate. They become your back-to-school campaign list. In late August and September, when every parent in your market is rebuilding the family schedule and deciding on fall activities, you’re not cold-prospecting — you’re following up with a thousand families who already met you, spun your wheel, watched their kid throw his first side kick at camp. That’s why the thousand-lead target matters: it front-loads your single best enrollment season of the year.

Does this actually work in the real world? A husband-and-wife school-owner team I coach had been through a rough couple of years and a long lull. They got a fire lit at one of our live events in the spring, went out and ran this exact play — big referral events in June, a hard kickoff with July 4th events, a heavy schedule of live-event marketing, and disciplined conversion of everything they captured — and put more than a hundred new enrollments on the books in about six weeks, from July 1st to mid-August. In the stretch everyone else writes off as “slow season.” That’s one example of many, and there was nothing magic about it except the plan.

The Summer Campaign Calendar: Who Does What, and When

A media mix without a calendar is a wish list. Here’s how the Blueprint lays out across the season:

May (planning month): Visit every school and get on the roster for fall orientation days. Arrange end-of-year passes and certificates. Book fall PE-Teacher and after-school enrichment dates. Build your complete inventory of festivals, markets, park events, camps, and blockbuster weekends. Recruit and train booth volunteers.

June: Run referral and buddy events inside your school. Start the farmers market and park-event rotation. Begin the camp circuit as day camps open. First movie booth if a family title opens big.

July: Kick off hard with July 4th events. Camp circuit at full speed — classes taught by day, parent appointments booked at pickup. Movie booths on the biggest family openings. Convert aggressively: July should be a top enrollment month.

August: Keep converting summer leads. Work every back-to-school orientation day you booked in May — this is where hundreds of appointments get made in a single week. Launch the back-to-school follow-up campaign across email, text, voicemail, voice AI, and direct mail to the entire summer database.

September: Harvest. Your fall school programs start delivering, orientation-day appointments convert, and the summer database keeps producing enrollments for months.

One warning on sequencing: nearly every play in this calendar has a booking deadline weeks or months ahead of the event itself. The orientation table, the camp visit, the festival booth, the theater weekend — they all go to whoever asked first. The whole Blueprint runs on the May planning month. Skip it and you’ll spend August apologizing to yourself.

The Math: What a Thousand-Lead Summer Is Actually Worth

Let’s put numbers on it, because this is where the motivation to do the unglamorous booking work comes from. Say you execute the mix at even a modest level and generate 1,000 leads across the summer. Suppose only 30% ever sit for an appointment and you enroll half of those — 150 new students between July and October. At a premium school charging in the $347–$397 range — call it $375 a month — that’s roughly $56,000 a month in new tuition, over $675,000 in annualized revenue, before a single renewal or upgrade. Cut my assumptions in half and it’s still a transformational season.

Now compare the media cost. A handful of theater booths at $500–$700 each, some festival fees, printing for passes and permission slips, and staff hours. Against a benchmark acquisition cost of $150–$300 per enrollment through paid media, the Blueprint’s blended cost per enrollment is a fraction of that — and the leads are warmer, because they met a human being from your school instead of clicking an ad. This is also why premium pricing and summer live-event marketing belong together: families who shook your hand at the camp pickup line don’t shop you against the $140-a-month commodity school down the street.

One operational note so the marketing math isn’t undermined from inside the building: while you’re running this campaign, don’t let summer travel puncture your billing. We never cancelled payments for a family traveling for two weeks or even the whole summer — we put their lesson time on hold, added it to the end of their program, and the payments continued. Marketing fills the top of the funnel; that policy keeps the bottom from leaking while you do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start planning summer marketing for my martial arts school?

May — before the school year ends. School staff scatter for the summer, so end-of-year passes, fall PE-Teacher bookings, and back-to-school orientation table reservations must be arranged while teachers and administrators are still in the building. Festival booths, camp visits, and theater weekends also book out weeks or months ahead. May is the planning month that makes June through September work.

Which summer marketing channel produces the most leads for martial arts schools?

Back-to-school orientation days are the single highest-yield events — I’ve made 85 appointments in two hours at one school, and clients working multiple schools have booked as many as 550 appointments in a week. But the biggest total volume comes from running the full mix, because camps, festivals, and theater booths produce leads all summer while orientation days pay off in one concentrated late-August window.

How much should a martial arts school budget for summer marketing?

Surprisingly little cash: movie theater booths run about $500–$700 each, festival and market fees vary locally, and the rest is printing and staff time. The real investment is labor and calendar discipline. Compared with the $150–$300 per enrollment a school typically spends acquiring students through paid media, a well-run summer live-event mix delivers enrollments at a fraction of the cost.

Your Next Step

If you want the full playbook behind this — the booth systems, the scripts, the appointment machinery — grab my free book Six Simple Steps to Add 100 Students at FillYourSchool.com.
