School owners batten down the hatches. They resign themselves to a soft 90 days. Then they do one of two things: they go into coast mode, or they book themselves solid with in-house summer camps and become babysitters for three months in the hope of scraping together some extra revenue.

Worse — and I hear this constantly from the coaches on my team — many owners actually pull back on marketing in June, July, and August because they believe spending money is futile. “We’re not going to get any new students anyway. Families are traveling. Our gross will be down 20%. Woe is me.”

Every one of those is a false belief. And they compound: you believe summer is slow, so you cut the ad budget, so you generate fewer leads, so summer is slow — and the belief gets “confirmed” for another year. My rule of thumb after five decades in this industry: never follow the majority. The majority is the mediocre majority, and in the summer they are all making the same mistake at the same time. That’s your opening.

The Proof: 100+ Enrollments in the “Dead” of July

Let me give you real results before I give you the system.

A husband-and-wife team I’ve coached for years — they run a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in a major metro market — came to one of our live member meetings in May with their numbers down and some family challenges weighing on them. They got focused, built momentum off a July 4th event, and over the following five weeks — the stretch everyone calls the dog days of summer — they wrote more than 100 new enrollments. Not leads. Not intros. Enrollments, in five weeks, in July. That same school, by the way, grew from the low-$20,000s per month when they started with me to consistently north of $100,000 a month.

Another member school rode a summer movie tie-in promotion — a major martial arts film release — to well over a thousand introductory appointments across July and August. And in my own Mile High Karate schools, going back 40 years, May and June was reliably my second-best six-week enrollment window of the entire year, behind only back-to-school.

None of that happened by accident, and none of it happened by discounting harder than the school down the street. It happened because we treated summer as three separate campaigns instead of one long nap.

The Three-Window Summer Offensive

Here is the framework I want you to steal. I call it the Three-Window Summer Offensive, and it works because it stops treating “summer” as a single season. Summer is three distinct marketing windows, each with its own job:

Window One — May and June: the Summer Special Surge. Reactivate your entire prospect database and front-load your advertising while parents are actively searching for something for their kids to do.

Window Two — July and August: the 1,000-Lead Harvest. Search demand dips, so you shift from advertising-led to event-led marketing — camps, community events, buddy days — with one numeric goal: bank 1,000 fresh leads before school starts.

Window Three — Back-to-School: the Cash-In. A six-week blitz where you hammer everything you banked in Windows One and Two with every follow-up weapon you own.

Two Markets, Two Calendars

Before you run the windows, split your thinking in two. The adult market runs on a psychological calendar: Memorial Day opens summer, Labor Day closes it. Adults aren’t leaving for school break — they’re distracted, but they’re home, and many have looser schedules than at any other time of year. The kids and family market runs on the school calendar: the last day of school and the first day of school are your real bookends, and they vary by region.

My argument — and my results over 40 years back it up — is that summer is the single most fruitful time of year to market to the kids market. Parents have one burning problem from June through August: “What do I do with my kids?” You are the answer. Everything below tells you how to show up as the answer.

Window One: May and June — The Summer Special Surge

Work Your Prospect List Before You Spend a Dime on Strangers

Long before “lead nurture” was a buzzword — back when my database was a stack of papers, then a VisiCalc spreadsheet, then Excel — I kept full contact information on every human being who ever raised a hand: everyone who called, walked in, attended an event, or did an intro and didn’t enroll. Name, address, phone, and later email. That list was an asset I treated like money in the bank.

Beginning in late April and hitting hard through May, I went back to that entire list with a summer offer. And I mean the entire list — someone who inquired 24 months ago, someone who came in for an intro two months ago and said they couldn’t afford it. It didn’t matter. Here’s the truth most owners never internalize: a no today is not a no forever. Someone who said no in March had an unusual expense that month, or a tight schedule, or the wind was blowing the wrong way. That same family says yes in June. Your warm list — people who have already expressed interest — always comes first, before you spend a nickel chasing the general market.

The Follow-Up Hierarchy: What Actually Converts

There’s a strange belief in our industry that direct mail is dead and email is king. Backwards. Most people get 200 emails a day and read almost none of them. Email is nearly free, so absolutely automate it and send daily — but understand where conversions actually come from. My hierarchy, in ascending order of effectiveness:

#5 — Retargeting (Google and social): cheap air cover, lowest direct conversion.

#4 — Email: essentially free, so run it daily, but expect it to support the other channels, not carry them.

#3 — Text messaging: two to three times per week to warm, opted-in leads.

#2 — Targeted direct mail: physical, sequential pieces. Almost nobody in your market is doing it, which is exactly why it works.

#1 — Live outbound phone calls: a live human talking to a live human beats everything else, by a wide margin.

On the phones, the method matters: cycle the list in the morning, late morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, and evening. You’ll only connect with 5–10% on any single pass — but keep cycling and by week’s end you’ve reached a large percentage of the whole list. Make sure your school’s number is saved in their phones from the first contact so you’re not showing up as a suspected spam call.

Build a Branded Summer Offer — and Enroll on the Spot

Package a summer special: members of mine are running six weeks for $97, or five weeks for $147 including the uniform. The structure matters less than the branding — it must feel like a summer-only reason to act now. It can even be a two-week program. What matters is what happens when they walk in.

Do not fall into the trial-program traps. We never made people wait six weeks to enroll, and we never played the “give me a credit card and we’ll auto-bill you if you don’t cancel” game. The prospect does one or two intro lessons and we run a normal enrollment conference, into a normal 12-month enrollment — what I teach as the 12-month Trial Enrollment. The summer offer becomes the rationale for enrolling immediately: “Enroll today and we’ll credit you back three times the $97 you’ve already invested against your enrollment.” You give them a legitimate, generous reason to finalize now, and you finalize now — at premium tuition, in the $347–$397 per month range that well-coached schools command, not at commodity pricing.

Front-Load Your Ad Budget While Search Demand Spikes

May 1st through roughly June 20th was one of the periods each year when I would compress two or three months of advertising budget into a single month and go full bore. Decades ago that meant saturating newspapers and running TV spots and infomercials. Today it means social media advertising first, plus Google and Google retargeting, plus direct mail.

Here’s why the timing works: Google search traffic spikes in May and June, every single year. Parents are actively hunting for summer activities for their kids. (Thirty years ago I saw the identical pattern in Yellow Pages call volume — heavy in May, near zero in July.) Demand is highest exactly when your competitors are cutting their budgets. Ride the spike; don’t sit it out.

Get Into the Elementary Schools Before the Bell Rings

At Mile High Karate’s peak, my six Denver-area schools had working relationships with 100 to 120 elementary schools. In the final weeks before summer break we would flood them: flyers home with the kids — often in the guise of good-attendance and good-grades award certificates — plus my “PE Teacher for a Day” program (the original that watered-down “school talks” were copied from, minus the components that make it convert), plus before- and after-school enrichment programs timed to graduate right as the school year ended. Everything we could do in the elementary schools, the churches, and the community in those last few weeks primed the pump for a wave of enrollments before school even let out.

Window Two: July and August — The 1,000-Lead Harvest

Set the Target: 1,000 Leads by Labor Day

My standing rule for my own schools was simple and numeric: generate 1,000 leads over July and August. A lead meant a real name, address, phone number, and (later) email of someone who had raised their hand in some way, shape, or form. Why 1,000? Because back-to-school is the most fruitful enrollment season of the year, and the school holding a 1,000-name warm list in late August is playing an entirely different game than the school starting from zero and buying cold clicks. Window Two exists to load the weapon that Window Three fires.

Buddy Events and Referral Days — and the “Everyone’s Out of Town” Myth

Referrals don’t happen because you sit at your desk hoping. They happen when you engineer one of two event types: events where one student brings 20 or 30 friends (pizza parties, birthday parties), or events where a third to half of your students each bring one or two friends (buddy days and themed special events). Summer is the richest buddy-event season of the year: water balloon battles, Nerf wars, lightsaber nights when a Star Wars property is hot, women’s self-defense days for the adult market. Kids are home, bored, and begging for something to do.

The objection is always the same: “All my families are out of town.” Run the actual math. Maybe 10–15% are traveling in any given week — 25% if you’re in an area so affluent everyone summers in Europe. The other 85% are home and restless. And here is the multiplier most schools miss: every referral event doubles as a prospect event. Anything you’d invite students’ buddies to, you invite your entire lead list to — email, text, postcard, and a live outbound call. One event, two audiences, and every attendee feeds the 1,000-lead count.

The Host-Parasite Play: Summer Camps Are Starving for You

The single biggest July opportunity is what old-school direct marketers call host-parasite (host-beneficiary, if you prefer polite company): someone else has already gathered your exact prospects, at their expense, and needs what you have. Every rec center camp, church Bible school, scout camp, daycare summer program, and park district camp in your area is starving for two things — activity and staffing. One of my coaches counted 13 separate summer camps within five miles of him, each hosting on the order of 100 kids. That’s 1,300 prime prospects, pre-corralled, whose organizers would love for you to come teach a class. Some camps even have buses and will deliver the kids to your school and pick them up afterward.

Go in, teach, collect permission slips ahead of time, and have a staff member on site at pick-up to meet parents and book appointments. Two pro tips: first, put a note in your file for January — camps plan and sell their programming early in the year, and the schools that lock in slots in January and February get the best access. Second, notice who runs these camps: usually schoolteachers and administrators on summer break, or bored high-school and college kids. The teachers are the same people running the schools and after-care programs in the fall — every camp relationship you build in July becomes a back-to-school channel in September.

Find Every Live Event in Your Market

Beyond camps, summer is wall-to-wall community events: Memorial Day festivals, July 4th celebrations (enormous in the U.S., with Canada Day playing the same role up north), rodeos, arts festivals, movie-night-in-the-park series, concerts at the lake, Labor Day blowouts. A family movie in the park is a goldmine of parents with three-to-eight-year-olds; a band in the park skews to the 20-to-35-year-old adult market. Booth it, run it, or simply work it — but be there capturing names.

How do you find them all? Layer your search:

AI tools: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok for every family-friendly live event in your area — movie nights, scout activities, church and city-sponsored events. The first answer is always lazy. Drill down two or three more times: “What else is supported by shopping centers, churches, community organizations?” Then play the tools off each other.

Event platforms: Eventbrite catches most ticketed community events; local parenting sites and calendars catch the rest; Nextdoor surfaces the hyper-local stuff nothing else lists.

Windshield time: drive your neighborhoods. Some of the biggest events I ever worked I found from banners at a park I drove past on the way to one of my schools — events that never appeared online. Check grocery-store flyer boards, coffee shops, rec-center front desks, church bulletins, the free weekly papers.

The highlighter meeting: I’d collect every parenting magazine and community calendar in the market, print the online calendars, show up to staff meeting with 25 copies and highlighters, and have the whole team comb them with a fine-tooth comb. Most owners simply aren’t observant. Make observation a system.

Keep Your Social Media Budget On

Here is what our data — across our member schools, going back well over a decade and consistently through the post-COVID years — shows about paid social in July and August: lead cost doesn’t inflate, lead quality doesn’t degrade, and lead volume doesn’t drop. Summer is simply not slow on social media. Google search is the one channel that genuinely dips in July and early August (nobody is searching “karate lessons” from the lake), and it’s the one data point that ever validated the summer-slowdown myth. So reallocate intelligently: hold or increase social spend all summer, expect the search dip, and be ready for search to spike again two weeks before school starts.

Window Three: Back-to-School — Cash In the List

The Six-Week Blitz

Back-to-school is the most fruitful enrollment season of the year, and it has a defined shape: two weeks before school starts through four weeks after — a six-week window, mirroring the May–June window on the front end of summer. (Depending on your region that’s August–September or September–October; my Colorado schools geared up for mid-August.) This is when you pull the trigger on every bit of advertising again — and when the 1,000 leads you harvested in Window Two turn into enrollments.

Orientation Nights: 85 Appointments in 90 Minutes

Nearly every school — public, private, charter, Montessori — holds a back-to-school orientation or meet-the-teacher night in the first days of the school year, and most allow community organizations to table alongside the scouts and the soccer league. These are the highest-density lead events in existence. The last one I personally worked with one of my schools, roughly 500 parents filed past our table in a school gym and about 20% signed their kids up for free classes: 85 appointments in 90 minutes — no prize wheel needed. And orientation-night leads convert better than normal event leads: those 85 appointments project to 50–60 showed intros and 20–30 enrollments from a single evening. One school owner I coach built this into a machine and generated over 500 appointments and roughly 200 enrollments in about two months of back-to-school orientation events.

One warning from experience: districts cluster these nights. My Jefferson County schools each worked about 20 elementary schools, and the district scheduled orientations on the same Tuesdays and Wednesdays — we might face eight schools on one night and nine the next. You need trained staff and volunteers lined up in advance, or you’ll watch the best lead night of the year happen without you.

Hammer the List With Every Channel

Now you fire everything at the list you built: live outbound callers first (still the most productive channel), an AI voice agent second in today’s world, texts two or three times a week, email daily or twice daily, six to eight sequential direct mail pieces across the six weeks, and retargeting on Google and social. Prioritize by recency — June, July, and August leads first, then year-to-date, then last year’s list, working backwards through everything you have; in my schools that was sometimes a 5,000-name file. First priority of all: everyone who did an intro and didn’t enroll, and everyone who raised a hand at an event but never booked an appointment. And a compliance note that keeps getting sharper: reserve texting and AI voice for warm, opted-in leads who know who you are — several states have gotten aggressive about the rules, and cold outreach on those channels will get you in trouble.

The Math: What 1,000 Summer Leads Is Actually Worth

Run the numbers on the whole offensive, conservatively. Suppose your three windows bank 1,000 leads and only 5% ever convert — 50 enrollments. At the premium tuition well-coached schools charge (call it $375 per month on a 12-month Trial Enrollment), that’s $225,000 in first-year tuition, before renewals, upgrades, or family add-ons — and with sub-2% monthly attrition, the lifetime value runs far beyond year one. Against a typical acquisition cost of $150–$300 per enrollment in ad spend and staff time, summer stops being a season you survive and becomes the highest-ROI quarter on your calendar. That’s the difference between a school that plateaus and one on a genuine school growth trajectory — and it’s why the schools that also tighten up their sales and enrollment process before the leads arrive compound the result: every point of improvement in your intro-to-enrollment ratio multiplies across all 1,000 names.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should martial arts schools cut advertising in the summer?

No — for most channels, summer spend performs as well as any season. Our member-school data going back more than a decade shows social media lead costs and lead volume hold steady through July and August. The only channel with a genuine mid-summer dip is Google search, which spikes in May–June, crashes in July, and spikes again about two weeks before school starts. Front-load budget into May–June, hold social spend all summer, and re-accelerate everything for the six-week back-to-school window.

Does running a discounted summer special hurt premium positioning?

Not if you structure it correctly. A branded offer like six weeks for $97 is a low-friction entry point, not a pricing statement. The key is the enrollment process behind it: one or two intro lessons, then a normal enrollment conference into a normal 12-month Trial Enrollment at full premium tuition ($347–$397 per month at top schools), using the special as the rationale to finalize today — for example, crediting back a multiple of what they’ve already paid. What damages positioning is the opposite: letting people drift for six weeks uncommitted, or auto-billing gimmicks that start the relationship with distrust.

When should I start back-to-school marketing?

Your back-to-school campaign starts in July — that’s when you harvest the 1,000 leads the campaign will run on, and when you should book your booths at school orientation nights. The blitz itself runs a six-week window: two weeks before the first day of school through four weeks after. Schools that wait until the week school starts to “dump money into marketing” are competing cold in the most competitive season; schools that primed the well all summer walk in with a warm list nobody can match.

Your Next Step

You now have the map: surge in May–June, harvest 1,000 leads in July–August, cash in at back-to-school. The owners who execute it don’t have slow summers — they have their best 90 days of the year.
