A five-lesson package like the old Tracy schools used to sell? Straight into a black belt enrollment pathway with an eighteen-month fallback, the way some legacy programs did it? I’ve run most of these models at one point or another. The lesson-count question turns out to be the wrong question entirely. There’s a much simpler dividing line, and once you see it, the rest of your intro process falls into place.

The Real Question Isn’t “How Many Lessons” — It’s “Who Has to Be in the Room”

If you’re enrolling an adult who’s training for themselves — no other decision-maker needs to be in the loop — do one private intro lesson and enroll them that day. Dragging it out longer just elongates the sales process for no good reason.

A child is different, and I’m solid on this: I don’t enroll a child without every decision-maker present — biological mom, biological dad, and anyone else with custody or financial responsibility. Sometimes that’s dad and a stepmom, sometimes it’s a grandmother. Whoever needs to be involved in the decision, I want in the room. The problem with a one-lesson intro for a child is almost always logistical: getting every one of those people there at once. That’s the actual reason a second lesson exists — not because two lessons sell better than one, but because it usually takes two visits to get everyone assembled and informed.

There’s a real exception worth knowing: if a child already knows everything about the program — a sibling of a current student, or a kid who’s been watching a friend’s progress for months and both moms have already been talking — there’s no reason to run them through a manufactured two-intro process. Hand them a uniform, get them in class, have the parents sign the paperwork. The dividing line is decision-makers being present and informed, not an arbitrary lesson count.

Ask for the Decision-Makers Early, But Watch Your Wording

It’s fine to raise the decision-makers question on the very first phone call — you just have to be careful how you word it. Don’t announce a requirement before someone’s even walked in. Frame it as inclusion: “we really like to have both parents, and anybody else involved, here so everyone’s fully aware of what’s going on.” Then soften it further — mention that both parents are welcome to take the first couple of classes with the child, and that they’re welcome to bring a friend from school or the neighborhood along too.

By the second lesson — the actual enrollment conference — the language shifts from invitation to plain statement of requirement: we do require both parents, and anybody involved with finances, transportation, or custody, to be here for the evaluation and enrollment process. Dr. Greg Moody’s exact phrasing is worth writing down and putting directly into your confirmation script and your student information sheet: “we require everybody in charge of schedule, transportation, finances, or custody.” Say that line at the first intro — it naturally opens a conversation about what the family structure actually looks like, and you genuinely need that information. This isn’t being intrusive. It’s the same as a doctor asking about your other health conditions: a professional needs the full picture to do the job right.

While you’re at it, strip out language that triggers a negative response anywhere in the process. Don’t say “sign the contract,” “down payment,” or “monthly payment” — say “initial tuition” and “monthly tuition” instead. The underlying rule: you never want to sound like a salesperson. You want to sound, look, and act like a teacher facilitating a family into a new educational process — in your wording, your objection handling, everything.

The Reschedule Script for Booking Lesson Two

At the end of the first lesson, hand the family a next-steps sheet and walk through it. Ask them to talk, as a family, about what the child liked and what the parent specifically wants the child to get out of the program — and tell them up front those two things might be completely different, and that’s fine. Hand them the beginner class schedule and ask them to pick two regular weekly time slots rather than “whenever works.”

Tie the second lesson to a milestone instead of just “come back”: white belt testing, contingent on completing a self-discipline sheet and memorizing the student creed as a family between now and then. Frame the long-term path the way you’d frame elementary school — roughly three to four years to black belt for a typical seven-year-old, a couple more to second degree — the same way a family thinks about graduating one grade to the next.

Invite the parent to train alongside the child. Roughly half our students already have a parent training with them, and it’s worth pointing out explicitly: this is one of the few activities a parent already knows well enough to do alongside their kid, when most other activities are structured to keep parents on the sideline. Ask, gently, who else from school or the neighborhood might want to come try a class — not a hard referral pitch, just an open invitation. Then, before they leave, actually lock in the specific day and time for lesson two, restating who needs to be there.

Why Speed Beats Almost Everything Else

Here’s a rule worth building your entire process around: students are not more excited after seven lessons than they are after one or two. Excitement peaks early and decays as people acclimate — buy a car you’ve been lusting after, and the first week you’re showing it off to everyone; four months later, it’s just your car. The value of wanting something lives in the pursuit of it, not in actually having it, and the same dynamic applies to a new student.

That has real, practical consequences. If your intro process drags out three or four weeks, you lose the enrollment. If a renewal drags out four months instead of four weeks, you miss the window entirely. Referrals overwhelmingly come from excited white belts, not from settled-in brown belts — ask early, or don’t expect to get much. And once someone’s actually ready to say yes, close it. A decision delayed is a decision that often doesn’t happen; a sale delayed is a sale that dies. Don’t invent an artificial waiting period once a family is ready.

The best version of this starts before they ever walk in the door: send reviews, testimonials, and program information ahead of the first visit so the excitement is already building by the time they arrive. The more educated and excited a family is before they show up, the easier every step after that becomes.

Handling a Night With Five Intros at Once

If some of the people showing up on a given night have already told you they’re ready to enroll — they know the price, they’ve already decided — don’t force them through an extra lesson just to match your usual process. As long as every decision-maker is present, enroll them that same night.

The logistics matter here: split roles so nothing falls through the cracks. One person runs enrollment paperwork while someone else keeps class moving and handles rescheduling everyone else. Pull the easiest, most-ready person out five or ten minutes before class ends, get them enrolled, then move to the next. What you never do is let anyone walk out the door without their next step locked in. I’ve heard staff say, “I figured we’d just call them when they got home” — that is a fireable mistake. When you’re genuinely slammed, schedule the next lesson on the way in the door if that’s what it takes, but never let someone leave without a next step on the calendar.

Handling a Reluctant Decision-Maker

It’s fine if a parent or grandparent enrolling a reluctant child doesn’t especially care whether the kid is excited yet. Some families are enrolling out of a genuine sense of what’s good for the child, not the child’s own enthusiasm, and that’s a completely legitimate reason to move forward. In that situation, borrow the language a highly selective university’s admissions office would use: “we do require the child to come in for an evaluation class to make sure it’s a good fit.” What you don’t do is launch into price, term length, and paperwork at a booth or on a walk-in before the family has actually experienced a class — you’ll end up with someone who meant “I’ll try fifty dollars for the first month” hearing “eight hundred dollars and a twelve-month commitment,” and that mismatch kills deals that were otherwise winnable.

Real Rapport Comes From Commonality, Not Mirroring Tricks

Skip the NLP-style mirroring techniques — matching tone, tempo, posture. They’re artificial, and people can usually sense it. Real rapport is built the way humans actually build it: shared background, shared interests, overlapping beliefs. Ask genuine questions. If someone holds a view that’s the opposite of yours, listen as intently as you can rather than steering away from it. If there’s real overlap, share back a little. The goal in a sales conversation isn’t to get someone to think and act like you — it’s to get inside their world and have them feel like who you are and what you do is genuinely a good fit for them.

FAQ

Q: Should every child go through two intro lessons? A: No. The deciding factor is whether every decision-maker is present and informed, not a fixed lesson count. A sibling of a current student, or a child who already knows the program well, can go straight to a single enrollment visit.

Q: What if only one parent can make it to the second lesson? A: Reschedule for a time when everyone required can attend, rather than enrolling without full decision-maker presence — but reschedule it as soon as possible, since delay is what costs you the excitement window that makes enrollment easy in the first place.

Q: Isn’t it manipulative to soften the language around a requirement? A: No — it’s accurate, not deceptive. You’re using inclusion-focused wording on the first call and moving to plain, explicit requirement language by the actual enrollment conference. The requirement itself never changes.

Q: How fast is too fast when enrolling someone? A: As long as every actual decision-maker is present and the family has genuinely experienced a class, same-day enrollment isn’t too fast. In practice, the risk runs almost entirely the other direction — dragging the process out costs you far more than moving quickly ever does.

Want feedback on your own intro-to-enrollment process? Post your script in our coaching community for direct feedback, or call or text National Director Bob Dunne at 1-720-256-0208 for a free school growth evaluation.
