One owner put his own landing page on the screen and asked why 60-plus visitors had produced exactly one opt-in. What follows is the answer I gave him, expanded with the operator math. Names, school names, markets and individual figures have been removed — the teaching is what matters, not whose page it was.

Likes Are Not Results, and Believing Otherwise Is Expensive

Almost every week I talk with an owner who tells me marketing is handled: “I’m doing Facebook, and Facebook’s really working. I got 500 likes on a post yesterday and I’ve got 3,000 followers.”

Then I ask the only two questions that matter. How many of those followers live within three or four miles of your front door? And what contact information do you have on them?

The answer is usually silence. If it’s a public page, half of them could be on another continent. You have no phone number, no email, no mailing address, and no way to make them an offer. You have an audience you don’t own, on a platform that will happily rent it back to you.

That is actually the one legitimate use of a like: it lets you pay the platform a second time to get back in front of that person. That’s it. That’s the whole asset.

I’ve spent well into six figures on paid social over the years, and I don’t track likes. I don’t track comments. I don’t track shares. I don’t track page visits as a headline number. This is the same mistake owners made in the early days of the web when everyone bragged about “hits.” A hit was never a customer. Neither is a like.

If you run a martial arts school, the number you actually care about is enrollments — and behind that, how long you keep them and what they pay you. Step back one link and you care about intros: how many human beings walked into your school where you had a chance to enroll them. Step back one more and you care about leads: how many people gave you enough contact information that you could initiate the conversation.

That backward walk is the entire framework. I call it the Four-Link Ad Chain, and it’s the diagnostic I use before I’ll give any owner an opinion about their ads. If you want the wider context of where paid media sits inside a complete lead system, start at the martial arts school marketing hub.

The Four-Link Ad Chain

A paid social campaign is a chain with four links. Money goes in one end and enrolled students come out the other, and the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. You cannot fix a campaign by staring at total spend or at the cost per click. You fix it by finding the one link that’s broken and repairing that link.

Link

The number

What it measures

Where a well-run school lives

1. Traffic

Right-radius visitors to your landing page

Are the correct people arriving at all?

90%+ from your real drive-time radius

2. You should be able to say all four out loud, this week, without opening a spreadsheet. Most owners can’t say any of them — which is precisely why they end up talking about likes instead.

Before we walk the links, there’s one thing sitting in front of Link 1 that decides more than the rest of your ad account combined.

The Link Before the Links: The Picture Decides Most of It

Here is the finding that reorganizes how you should spend your creative time. By the platform’s own numbers, roughly 80% of an individual ad’s performance — the likelihood that someone stops, clicks, and lands on your page — is the graphic. Not the headline. Not the body copy. Not your targeting cleverness. The image.

That is a far higher share than almost any other medium I’ve ever bought. In print, in direct mail, in television, copy carries much more of the load. In the feed, the picture is doing the work, because the picture is what has to interrupt a distracted person on a phone.

Three operating rules follow from that:

Run four to six images against the same ad, not one. The platforms are extremely good at split testing — that’s the one place where their interests and yours genuinely line up, because they get paid on response. Load several distinct photographs, let the algorithm sort them, then kill the losers and scale the winner. You are not guessing. You are being told.

Rotate the winner before it dies. Every image burns out. In a feed environment where you’re hitting the same local audience repeatedly, frequency climbs fast and people simply stop seeing your ad — the same way people stop seeing a rack card that’s been sitting in the same restaurant lobby in the same color for six months. Plan on a dramatic change every three to six weeks, not a tweak. New photograph, new color, new headline. I’ve flighted media this way since long before there was an internet: go heavy, wear it out, change it, go heavy again.

Make the picture on the ad the picture on the landing page. This is the single most common congruence failure I see. The ad shows one thing, the landing page shows something else, and the prospect’s reaction is “that’s not what I was looking for.” That reaction has a name in your analytics — bounce rate — and it is you paying for a click and throwing it in the trash. Same image, same offer, same branding, ad to page.

And on the subject of the picture itself: people buy from people, not from faceless bureaucracies. I keep seeing schools try to make their landing page look corporate — a torso in a uniform, a logo, no human face. Somebody is about to walk into a room and be physically vulnerable in front of a stranger. Show them the stranger. The head instructor or the owner, on camera or in a photograph with a student, talking like a human being, is worth more than any amount of polish.

Link 1 — Traffic: Are the Right People Even Arriving?

Unique visitors are not a vanity number if you interrogate them properly. I look at exactly one thing: where did they come from? Not “how many,” but “how many from a three-to-four-mile radius around my school.”

A campaign delivering 4,000 visits from all over the country is worse than one delivering 300 visits from your actual drive time, because the first one is charging you real money to entertain people who will never walk through your door. Tighten the radius. Check the geography report weekly. If your traffic is cheap and broad, it is cheap for a reason.

Break signal: high volume, low local share, or a cost per landing-page visit that keeps climbing while your image stays the same. Fix: tighten geography first, then change the creative. Traffic problems are creative problems about 80% of the time.

Link 2 — Capture: What Percentage Give You Contact Information?

This is the link that was broken on the page that owner shared with me, and it’s the one broken in most schools.

Sixty visitors and one opt-in is a 1.7% conversion rate. I want to see 20 to 30%. You will never get near 100% — there will always be people who land and leave — but the gap between 2% and 25% is a twelve-fold difference in your cost per lead, produced by the same ad spend. Nothing else in your marketing pays that kind of return on an afternoon’s work.

Here’s what was wrong with that page, and it’s a catalog of the usual suspects.

The offer didn’t make sense to a stranger. The headline was a coupon for 50% off belt testing. Put yourself in the prospect’s head: she doesn’t know what belt testing is, she didn’t know there was a fee for it, and now her first question about your school is “wait, I have to pay for testing?” You have introduced an objection before you’ve introduced yourself. An offer has to be understandable to someone who knows nothing about martial arts. A free month of lessons, or two weeks free — which I tend to default to because of the way it converts — is understandable in one second.

The offer was buried. Further down that page there actually was a month of unlimited classes. The headline was a uniform voucher. Lead with the biggest, simplest thing you’re giving away, stated as a dollar value: Register now to receive a free month of lessons — a $149 value.

There was legal gobbledygook above the fold. “Valid for new students only, limit one per student, membership required, other restrictions may apply.” Get rid of all of it. Nobody standing in a dentist’s waiting room is going to decode your terms and conditions on a phone screen.

It wasn’t designed mobile-first. If the traffic is coming from paid social, it is 90%-plus mobile. Design the page on a phone first and adapt it to desktop second, not the other way around. Responsive scaling, not a separate mobile site — the “m-dot” era ended a decade ago. And if a page looks broken on someone’s device, you haven’t just lost a conversion, you’ve lost trust.

Add urgency after the opt-in, not before. Some of the strongest pages I’ve seen from members recently run a countdown clock on the thank-you step: opt in, then see “call us in the next 30 minutes and we’ll double this to two months free plus a $50 uniform.” The first page’s only job is capture. The second page’s job is to drive an immediate phone call.

Two more things about Link 2 that most owners get wrong.

Get the phone number. I almost never run an opt-in form that asks only for an email address. If email is your only follow-up channel, you have one weak lever. Email is dying a slow and painful death — it still works, but it works far less than it used to, and it cannot hold a conversation. With a phone number you can text, you can call, you can drop an automated voicemail. With a mailing address you can put a postcard physically in their hand. Every field you add costs you a few points of conversion and buys you an enormous multiple in follow-up capability. That trade is worth making.

Put the retargeting pixel on the page. Both major platforms give you a snippet of code. Put it on the landing page and on the thank-you page as separate events. Now the 75% who landed and didn’t opt in can still be reached — and the ones who did opt in can see a completely different ad. That’s the one place likes and audiences finally do something useful.

Landing Pages Versus “Send Them to My Website”

Owners resist landing pages because they already paid for a website. Understand what those two things are.

Your website is a building with forty doors. Schedule, about us, our instructors, our programs, blog, contact, three social icons, a phone number in eight-point type. Every one of those is an exit. It is an information brochure, and it is very good at letting a curious person satisfy their curiosity and leave.

A landing page is a room with one door. One offer, one headline, one form, no navigation. Its only job is to convert an anonymous visitor into a contact you own.

You cannot buy paid traffic and pour it into a brochure. You will pay full price for the click and capture almost nobody. And here’s a practical shortcut: the better landing-page platforms rank their templates by average conversion rate. You don’t have to guess which layout works. Pick from the top of that list, put your offer in it, and you’ve skipped a year of testing.

Then — and this is the part almost nobody does — know your landing page conversion rate as a live number. Not a number you could calculate if someone asked. A number written on a whiteboard in your office and updated every week. Visits in, opt-ins out, percentage. The moment that number is visible, you will start improving it, because you cannot ignore a number you have to look at every day.

Build one page per campaign, not one page for everything. If you’re running three different images and two different offers, the page has to match what they clicked.

Link 3 — Connect: Turning Contacts Into Booked Appointments

A lead is not a result. A lead is a phone number with a short shelf life.

The correct model is not “wait for them to call.” It’s a stacked, multi-channel sequence that begins immediately and drives every single channel back to one place: a live phone conversation, and from there a booked appointment.

Here’s what a real sequence looks like. A phone call within minutes, not hours. A text message, because texting is where actual dialogue happens now — I’ve had genuine back-and-forth conversations by text that would have died in an email inbox after one exchange. An automated voicemail that lands without ringing. A short email. Then a series of postcards over the following weeks, every one of them telling the prospect to call. Retargeting ads running underneath the whole thing so your face keeps appearing while the sequence runs.

Why the phone above everything? Because you cannot ask a question by email. A prospect will send you one question, but there is always a second question underneath the first one — the real reason they’re looking — and you will never surface it in writing. On the phone you can ask what problem they’re trying to solve and what they’re hoping this does for their kid, and then you can actually help them. That’s the conversation that produces a booked appointment.

Break signal: you’re generating leads and almost none turn into scheduled intros. Fix: speed first, channels second. Most “bad lead” complaints are contact-attempt problems, not lead-quality problems. If the only contact information you captured was an email address, the fix is upstream in Link 2.

Link 4 — Close: Appointments Into Enrollments

If Links 1 through 3 are healthy and enrollments still aren’t happening, stop looking at your ads. You do not have a marketing problem. You have a sales problem, and no amount of ad spend fixes it — it just makes it more expensive.

At this link the questions change entirely. Who conducts the intro? Is it the same structured conversation every time, or does it depend on who’s on the floor? Are you presenting a 12-month Trial Enrollment — framed as your school evaluating whether the student is a fit for the full Black Belt program — or are you apologizing for the price and hoping? Well-coached schools run 60–70% and better from shown appointments to enrollments. If you’re at 30%, the marketing was fine and the mat conversation wasn’t.

The Math: What Fixing One Link Actually Does

Take a school spending $2,000 a month on paid social, with a landing-page click costing $4. That’s 500 visitors.

Broken chain: a 2% opt-in rate gives you 10 leads. Email-only capture, follow-up whenever someone gets to it, so 25% become appointments — call it 2 or 3 intros. At a 60% close, that’s 1 or 2 enrollments. Your cost per enrollment is somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000. The owner’s conclusion is “Facebook ads don’t work for martial arts.”

Repaired chain, same $2,000, same 500 visitors: a proper landing page at 20% gives you 100 leads at $20 each. Phone numbers captured, so a real multi-channel sequence runs — 25% book, giving 25 appointments. A disciplined intro at 60% produces 15 enrollments. Cost per enrollment: about $133 — right inside the $150–$300 band a well-run school should expect to pay to acquire a student.

Nothing changed about the spend. Nothing changed about the platform. Two links got repaired.

Now price it out. Fifteen new students at roughly $375 a month in new-student tuition is about $5,625 a month in added gross — from a $2,000 spend. And that’s the shallow number. At a lifetime student value target of $7,000 to $9,000, those fifteen enrollments represent well over $100,000 in eventual value. That’s what a twelve-point improvement in one landing page is actually worth. It’s also why the industry’s $140–$185 average tuition is a trap: at commodity pricing, the same ad spend that just made you money loses it.

The Diagnostic: What Each Broken Link Tells You to Fix

Broken link

What you see

What it actually means

First fix

1. Traffic

Cost per visit climbing; visitors from outside your radius

Wrong picture or wrong geography

New creative (4–6 images), tighten the radius

2. Capture

Under 10% opt-in

The offer is confusing, buried, or the page isn’t mobile-first

Simple free-trial headline with a dollar value; capture phone; pixel the page

3. Connect

Leads pile up, few appointments

Slow contact, or email-only capture

Contact in minutes; text, call, voicemail, mail; retarget

4. Close

Intros show up, few enroll

Sales problem, not a marketing problem

Standardize the intro; present the 12-month Trial Enrollment properly

Run this top to bottom, in order, once a week. Do not skip to Link 4 because it’s the one you’re emotionally attached to, and do not spend three weeks tuning audiences when your landing page converts at 2%.

What Free Social Is Actually Good For

None of this means you should abandon organic posting. It means you should be honest about its job. Free social supports paid media; it does not replace it.

Live-cast your belt graduations and intramural tournaments so parents who couldn’t attend can watch and share. Photograph every new enrollment against a branded backdrop with your school name on it, tag them, and let them share it with their friends. Post short video testimonials shot on a phone with a clip-on lavalier microphone and a class running in the background — then put those same videos on your video channel, properly tagged, where they’ll keep working for years.

And stack up five-star reviews on your business page and your local map listing, because when someone clicks your ad and checks you out, that’s what they see. The best method I’ve heard came from a member who added one question to the progress conversation he already has with every family a couple of months in, right before testing: “Have you had a chance to leave us a review?” Then he hands them their phone and texts them the links on the spot. He generated well over a hundred five-star reviews that way. One caveat worth its weight in gold: make sure they’re on cell signal, not your school’s Wi-Fi, or the reviews all arrive from one IP address and you get flagged.

Long-form video in the feed, on the other hand, is like putting a television screen beside a highway where everyone’s blasting past at 70 miles an hour. Save it for a platform where people arrive intending to watch.

Related reading: Fix Your Martial Arts School Funnel: Landing Pages & Follow-Up and Social Media Marketing for Martial Arts Schools: Stop Chasing Likes and Start Marketing in a Vacuum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good landing page conversion rate for a martial arts school?

Twenty to thirty percent of visitors giving you contact information is the standard I hold schools to on paid social traffic. Below ten percent, something structural is wrong — usually an offer a stranger can’t understand, a headline buried under legal disclaimers, or a page that wasn’t designed for a phone even though nearly all your traffic is mobile. Two percent, which is roughly one opt-in from sixty visitors, means you’re paying full price for clicks and capturing almost nothing. The most important discipline isn’t hitting a specific target, it’s knowing your current number as a live figure updated weekly. Owners who track that number improve it within a month. Owners who don’t, never do.

Should I send Facebook ad traffic to my website or a landing page?

Always a landing page. Your website is an information brochure with dozens of exits — navigation menus, program pages, a blog, social icons — and every one of them lets a curious visitor satisfy their curiosity and leave without ever becoming a contact you can follow up with. A landing page has one offer, one headline, one form and no navigation. Build a separate page for each campaign so the image and offer on the page match exactly what the person clicked, because incongruence between ad and page produces an instant bounce that you paid for. Use a platform that ranks its templates by average conversion rate, and start from the top of that list rather than guessing at a layout.

Do likes and followers matter at all for a martial arts school?

Not as a measure of results. A like tells you nothing about whether that person lives within driving distance of your school, and it gives you no contact information, so you cannot make them an offer or follow up with them. The one genuine use is that a built audience gives you something to advertise back to — which means the value of a like is that you can pay the platform again to reach that person. Reviews are the exception worth chasing: a business page with a hundred-plus five-star reviews meaningfully improves how paid traffic converts, because that’s what a prospect checks after clicking your ad. Chase reviews and contact information. Don’t chase applause.

Your Next Step

If you cannot say your four numbers out loud right now — right-radius traffic, landing page conversion rate, contact-to-appointment rate, appointment-to-enrollment rate — then you don’t have an advertising problem yet. You have a measurement problem, and it’s costing you every month you leave it alone.

Start here: download my free book, Six Simple Steps to Add 100 Students, at FillYourSchool.com. It lays out the full lead-generation and enrollment system these four numbers sit inside.

Then let’s look at your actual chain together. We’ll pull your real numbers, find the one broken link, and build the fix. Most owners discover the problem is one page and one follow-up sequence, not the platform, not the market, and not the ad budget.

Your School Should Not Depend on You Doing Everything

In your free growth diagnostic, Stephen Oliver and Jeff Smith will identify the biggest obstacle between your school or gym and its next revenue level — and map the most direct path forward.
