Now Is the Time to Hustle: Seizing the Inflection Points in Your Market
Every so often our industry hits what I call an inflection point — a window when conditions line up to make the next 18 months dramatically different from the last. I’ve lived through several. When one arrives, the owners who hustle like never before capture years of growth in months, while everyone else watches it pass. Here’s how to recognize the moment and seize it.
Two Forces That Create an Inflection Point
The biggest windows open when two things happen at once: an improving economy and a cultural tailwind for the martial arts. When a recession lifts, consumer optimism and discretionary spending come back — and our market (kids’ education and development) is relatively recession-resistant to begin with. Layer on a cultural moment — a hit martial arts movie, for instance — and you get a wave of receptive prospects who already view training as valuable before they ever call you. A blockbuster can act like a two-hour infomercial for martial arts lessons, watched by millions. When that happens, demand is the highest it ever gets.

You Cannot Sit on the Sidelines
The mistake owners make at an inflection point is coasting — assuming the tailwind will blow students through the door on its own. It won’t. When the window is open, saturate your market:
- Mail your prospect database repeatedly with strong “grabber” pieces.
- Get into summer camps, day cares, and churches — target thousands of leads from these alone.
- Be present at theaters, on local TV, and in newspaper inserts when the cultural moment is hot.
These are exactly the activities that, in past booms, produced 2,000-to-2,500-square-foot schools running 500 or more active students at premium tuition. The opportunity is real, but only for owners who act decisively while the window is open.
Don’t Chase Trends Just to Chase Them
One caution: a rising tide tempts owners to bolt on whatever’s trendy — adding programs or curriculum simply because “everyone else is doing it,” without asking whether there’s genuine demand for it in their market. There’s a real market for quality BJJ and adult fitness-oriented programs — but layering contradictory programs onto your school to follow a fad is a mistake. Pursue a market deliberately; don’t lurch after every trend.
You Can’t Be All Things to All People
Think of any strong brand. BMW is “the ultimate driving machine.” Apple is quality and ease of use — certainly not the cheapest. None of them tries to be everything to everyone. Pick a market you’re both genuinely competent at and excited about serving — the kids-and-family market, the adult market, whatever fits you — and pour your energy there. Focus is what lets you capture an inflection point instead of being scattered across it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an “inflection point” for a martial arts school?
A window when an improving economy and a cultural tailwind (like a hit martial arts movie) combine to create unusually high demand. Owners who aggressively market during these windows capture outsized growth.

What marketing should I ramp up during a boom?
Repeated direct mail to your prospect list, plus camps, day cares, churches, theaters, local TV, and newspaper inserts — saturating your community while prospects are most receptive.
Should I add new programs when business is surging?
Only if there’s genuine demand for them in your market. Adding curriculum just because it’s trendy dilutes your focus. Pick a market and serve it well rather than trying to be all things to all people.
