Abundance or Scarcity? The Mindset That Decides Your School’s Success
Last week I talked with ten martial arts school owners from all over the country. Several lamented the economy and explained — very articulately — why it’s impossible for “someone like them” to make a living right now. On the very same day, several others told me they were hitting all-time records. Same week. Same economy. Opposite results. The difference almost always comes down to one thing: an abundance mindset versus a scarcity mindset.
You Get What You Expect
Tony Robbins talks about choosing your “delusion.” What he means is that you can often choose a belief about a set of circumstances that supports your success — or one that guarantees your failure. Objectively, neither may be strictly true. So if you get to pick a belief that helps you or one that harms you, which would you choose?

You can believe we’re in a marvelously recession-resistant industry, where people turn to fitness, confidence and personal development precisely when times get hard. There’s plenty of evidence for it. Or you can believe no one will pay for martial arts lessons and it’s a great time to throw in the towel. I’ll guarantee you this: you’ll get what you expect and see what you believe.
Plenty of Schools Are Thriving Right Now
While some owners were melting down, here’s what was happening at schools that chose abundance: one Mile High Karate school enrolled 15 new students in the first week and a half of May. Another did 17 in two weeks. Another generated 200 leads and 65 introductory appointments from a single event. There is enormous opportunity in any economy — often more than ever. The owners capturing it aren’t luckier; they’re working smarter and refusing to adopt a losing belief.
Refocus on What Actually Drives Growth
Mindset without action is just a pep talk. So here’s where I’d point that abundance energy first.
Priority #1: Internal Events That Create Referrals
Run every internal promotion you can — birthday parties, buddy days, themed events, and invitations to all friends and family for every belt graduation. Your Martial Arts Wealth member resources give you customizable artwork and a fresh campaign every month; use it. Referrals are the highest-quality, lowest-cost students you will ever enroll.
Priority #2: Hit Every Grassroots Opportunity
Get in front of your community relentlessly: elementary schools (show & tell, career day, street-safe classes), churches, recreation and community centers, day cares, Scout functions, mall shows, kids’ fairs, fitness fairs, and local expos. Visibility compounds.
Priority #3: Master the Art of the Referral
Treat referrals as a skill to be studied, not an accident to be hoped for. A few books worth reading: Bob Burg’s Endless Referrals and The Go-Giver, Bill Cates’ Get More Referrals Now! and Don’t Keep Me a Secret, and Tim Templeton’s The Referral of a Lifetime.
What Gets Measured Gets Done
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: I’ve spoken with owners who had no idea what was actually happening in their schools. You cannot manage what you don’t measure. Your Martial Arts Wealth member resources include complete statistics reports — use them. Keep accurate Profit & Loss statements, balance sheets, and weekly operating stats so you always know exactly how your school and staff are performing.
Build the discipline on these fundamentals:
- Set goals. Define the gross revenue, active count, and net profit you want by year-end — then work backward to what you must accomplish today, this week, and this month.
- Know your numbers. Track enrollments, renewals, new monthly payments, and cash-at-school every single day.
- Start with the right people and build a proper full-time staff structure.
- Create a high-energy, no-excuses culture. No whiners. Winners remember results; losers remember reasons.
- Market and sell every day. Wake up each morning knowing you need 20-plus new students this month — and every month — to thrive.
You can’t develop winners if you aren’t one. Your students will model you and your staff. Be a product of the product, choose abundance, and back it with daily action — the results follow.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an abundance mindset for a martial arts school owner?
It’s the deliberate belief that opportunity exists in any economy and that your actions determine your results. Owners with an abundance mindset look for ways to enroll and serve more students rather than reasons it can’t be done.
Can mindset really affect enrollment numbers?
Indirectly but powerfully. Mindset drives behavior — whether you run that extra event, make that call, and hold your standards. Two owners in the same market routinely get opposite results based on what they choose to believe and do.
Where should I focus first to grow?
Internal referral-generating events, aggressive grassroots community marketing, and disciplined tracking of your numbers. Those three move the needle fastest.
