The Truth About Successful Schools
No McDojos. No Belt Factories. Just World-Class Martial Artists Who Built World-Class Schools.
One of the laziest criticisms in the martial arts industry is that successful schools must have sacrificed quality to achieve commercial success. If a school has hundreds of students or generates seven figures in revenue, someone inevitably labels it a “McDojo” or a “belt factory.”
The facts tell a very different story.
The three school owners featured below represent three completely different business models — traditional martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai. Their styles are different. Their teaching methods are different. Their student populations are different. Yet they all arrived at the same conclusion:
Professional systems don’t weaken martial arts — they strengthen them.
These are not marketing gurus who happened to own martial arts schools. They are lifelong martial artists whose competitive credentials, technical standards, and instructional reputations were established long before they built highly successful businesses.
Three Styles, One Standard
The School Owners

Three Styles. Three Business Models. One Common Principle.
Muay Thai. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Traditional Martial Arts.
Three completely different paths. One undeniable conclusion.
None of these instructors became successful despite maintaining high standards.
They became successful because they combined authentic martial arts with professional leadership, structured instruction, outstanding customer experience, and disciplined business systems.
The real “McDojos” are rarely the schools producing world champions, respected black belts, and lifelong students.
More often, they’re mediocre schools using the accusation to explain why they never learned to build a great business.
The evidence is clear: Professionalism doesn’t dilute martial arts. It allows exceptional martial artists to impact thousands more lives while preserving — and often elevating — the quality of their instruction.

The Credentials Behind the Numbers
Competitive titles, black belt lineages, academic credentials, and decades on the mat — earned long before any of these three built a seven-figure school.

Master Ben Brown
Master Ben Brown is the founder and head instructor of PHAS3 Martial Arts in Santa Rosa, California, and is recognized as one of America’s most respected Muay Thai coaches and martial arts educators. With nearly five decades of teaching experience, Brown has dedicated his life to developing world-class competitors while helping thousands of students discover greater confidence, discipline, resilience, and purpose through martial arts.
Brown began his martial arts journey at the age of five, training in his father’s martial arts school. By the age of fourteen, he was already teaching classes, beginning a career that has now spanned more than 47 years. His passion for martial arts eventually took him around the world, training military personnel, law enforcement agencies, and civilians while teaching practical self-defense and leadership principles internationally.
While teaching in Taiwan, Brown traveled to Thailand, where he discovered the art of Muay Thai. Determined to learn from the very best, he returned to the United States in search of elite instruction and became the lifelong student and close friend of legendary Muay Thai champion and UFC coach Jongsanan “The Woodenman” Fairtex. Brown made history by becoming the first instructor in North America to earn official Woodenman Certification, placing PHAS3 Martial Arts among the most authentic Muay Thai academies outside of Thailand.
As a coach, Brown has developed numerous championship-level fighters who have competed and won in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts at the national and international levels. His coaching philosophy emphasizes mastery of fundamentals, intelligent strategy, relentless preparation, and the mental toughness required to perform under pressure.
Founded in 2004, PHAS3 Martial Arts has become one of Northern California’s premier martial arts academies, serving everyone from young children taking their first class to elite professional fighters preparing for championship competition — a culture built on humility, mutual respect, hard work, and continuous improvement.
Beyond the gym, Brown is an accomplished motivational speaker and executive performance coach. Through his Fighter’s Edge programs, he applies the mindset, preparation, and resilience developed in championship competition to business leadership, executive coaching, and organizational performance, and was featured in the award-winning documentary Win. Lose. Forgive.
Whether coaching professional fighters, mentoring future instructors, speaking to business leaders, or introducing a child to martial arts for the first time, Master Ben Brown remains committed to a single mission: helping every student become stronger in mind, body, and spirit.

Professor Scott M. Sullivan, PhD
Professor Scott M. Sullivan, PhD, is the founder and chief instructor of Bam Bam Martial Arts in Houston, Texas, and is widely respected as a martial artist, coach, educator, and former professional competitor. With more than four decades of martial arts experience, he has successfully combined high-level competitive achievement with a lifelong commitment to developing technically skilled martial artists and principled leaders.
Known to many in the combat sports world as “Bam Bam,” Sullivan established himself as one of America’s premier heavyweight strikers during the 1990s. He earned the distinction of U.S. Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion and Shootboxing Champion, competing on major international fight cards in Las Vegas, Tokyo, and Moscow against elite opponents from around the world — a record that earned him a reputation for toughness, technical skill, and professionalism.
Sullivan’s martial arts expertise extends well beyond striking arts. He is a 4th Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with rank and certifications tracing directly to some of the most respected Gracie lineages in Brazil, including credentials signed by Grandmaster Carlos Robson Gracie and Grandmaster Amélio Arruda Camarra. His technical foundation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts has enabled him to develop well-rounded fighters while creating structured programs for students of every age and experience level.
As the founder of Bam Bam Martial Arts, Professor Sullivan has built one of Houston’s most respected martial arts academies. Under his leadership, the academy has trained thousands of students while maintaining an unwavering emphasis on technical excellence, discipline, character development, and practical self-defense — developing the complete individual, physically, mentally, and morally, rather than simply producing successful competitors.
In addition to his accomplishments on the mat, Professor Sullivan holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. His academic work focuses on classical ethics, logic, and virtue development, and he is the author of several respected books on philosophy and traditional logic — a rare combination of scholar and fighter that has made him a sought-after speaker and educator.
Whether coaching competitors, mentoring instructors, or introducing children to their first martial arts class, Professor Scott Sullivan continues to exemplify the highest ideals of the martial arts: technical excellence, competitive spirit, disciplined leadership, and a lifelong commitment to helping others reach their full potential.

While the academy offers outstanding instruction in Tae Kwon Do, Combat Hapkido, self-defense, and leadership development, its true reputation has been built on producing confident young leaders, professional instructors, and families committed to personal excellence — character development, discipline, public speaking, leadership, and service woven into every level of the curriculum.
